Where do pencils go?

I sharpen half a dozen pencils and put them in a plastic cup tacked to the wall in my garage. Whenever I find a pencil I put it in the cup. A few weeks later it's empty again. I start over. I'm not complaining really. Pencils are cheap enough. Just wondering.....

Check in that cup your wife keeps on top of the dryer. If I need a screw driver tip for the cordless, a small drill bit or if I can't find that screw that I took out of something last week chances are it is on top of the clothes dryer.

The cup is the problem - way to organized. Sharpen a dozen pencils and go to work. Leave pencil at site of that task, move on to another task, leave pencil. Soon you will be able to find a pencil within arms reach no matter where you are in the shop!

Gordy, this time of year it's difficult for all of us. It's the season, the change from the drab, gray, cold winter months to the rebirth and reawakening of life, a conformation of spirit if you will. Young spring breakers are wishing they'd spent more time in the tanning booth, snow birds are packing up their 6 MPG RV's for the trek north, following the example left by the birds. Teenagers get pregnant, parents sweat a lot more and the neighbor's dog will run off for a 5 day long booty call on the prized, show winning Saluki down the street, ultimately producing Saluki Doodles in a few months to it's owners shame. Yes, it's that time of year again when bladder issues can become a social problem again. Gordy, you pencils are in the garden putting moves on string bean stalks. Either this or they're under the bed making moves on the dust bunnies again. You don't want a repeat of last year do you . . .

I keep an entire box of pencils, all sharpened in my tool bag.  When they get dull, or more likely when I break the point, I put them in the pouch of my bag next to the box of sharp ones.  I consider it lucky if I have 3/4 of them by the time I need to sharpen again.  I am convinced they run away with my socks that are in the laundry.  I still have no idea how they get together, but I am sure of it.

I solved the lost pencil problem by eliminating all horizontal surfaces in my shop.  8)

I think there is a tidal influence.  At work I have pens in my desk and usually they slowly go away until I break down and go to the supply cabinet to replenish.  Recently I've noticed that my drawer is filling up with pens.  I currenly have so many I may have to put some back in the supply cabinet.  This ebb and flow of pens is inexplicable.  Perhaps I will have to put up a camera and discover what's happening.
