Anderson Bailers

Just a quick one for a change.  I looked up Anderson Bailers and they show two sizes, a super mini and one a bit larger.  Which one is recommended for the CS 20?  Does someone have a good explanation on how they work and what are the negatives?  Can they fail OPEN?  I pretty much understand the principle of the water flowing past the device creating a suction to draw from the people side of the sailboat.  Is it spring loaded?  Can it be locked closed if by chance it gets fouled somehow and the water starts to come back into the people tank?  Installation I suspect is cut the hole, install the gaskets, topside and bottom(?) and secure with apprpriate and I assume provided screws.  I seem to remember a post discribing this installation a while back.

In the pictures you can see the bailer in the closed position.  It locks in that position.  I suppose someone could whack it with their foot and somehow open it inadvertently.  Assuming you install enough goop(caulk) and the bailer is closed then you should not have any leaks.  Once open it should work as advertised. 

The one I have is a mini.  It is not spring loaded.  You open or close it manually. 

I do remember a post by someone where the location of the bailer was aft of the center board and the flow around the board may have caused it to not work as well.  I located mine parallel to the center board and on opposite side of keel so that flow around CB should not bother it.

I tell you all of this with the caveat that my boat has still not been launched so all the above is theoretical.

  Somewhere in the plans or parts list for my CS17 A "New Large" Anderson bailer is specified.  I bought mine from Graham at last year's B&B gathering and it works just fine.  Mine is also installed on the side opposite the centerboard.

  I've had no problems with it.

Hi guys,

That's my Anderson bailer that won't work because it is located directly behind the centerboard.  I haven't moved it yet, but I can tell you not to worry about accidently leaving it open.  I've opened it several times during testing, and launched with it open a couple of times too.  You'll get two inches of water into the bottom of the boat but you will not even come close to sinking.  I have to bail the water out because my bailer doesn't work, but yours should drain out once you pick up some boat speed. 

Having sailed my CS17 for a year now without a functional bailer, I can't see where you would need more then the small model.

When using an Anderson Bailer in a CS 17 or CS 20, one would need two. on on each side of the keel. If only one were used, the water on the other side of the keel would remain in the boat as there is no way for it to cross. We always used two on Lightnings.  Mick

Sorry to disagree with MickG on this one but I have one Anderson bailer per plans on the opposite side from the centerboard and under the thwart.  As tacks are made the little water accumulation from splashing in moves to the other side thus only one bailer is needed.  Apparently Core Sounds are much drier than Lightnings.

I am trying to remember my Lightening from about 50 years ago. Its center board trunk was about 3 ft long, and had a heavy, iron plate center board. The ribs of the boat were exposed and could trap water. I did not have a bailer but used a small bucket, metal at that time. I remember not being able to collect all the water from the bilge and usually had some sloshing about. At the time I was only concerned with sinking if I did not bail enough, not getting all the water out.
