Ken_Potts Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007  I sure hope you had help with those rips - If you handled all those floppy pieces of wood on your own you're my hero of the day.  When I've had to rip long pieces on the porch I've had to open the door, start with the wood inside the house and feed the wood through the saw and out the porch door but I haven't ripped anything quite as long as what you've shown in living memory. Norman Colter Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 Haven't had much boat time, been doing a bunch of snow moving. We only need one more inch to set a record for the most snow fall in december, and we're getting more tonight. I have made time to push all the mizzen staves through the dado blade creating the birdsmouth. I have started to mark them for the taper. Plan to push all the main staves through the dado, and mark them, then cut the tapers for both masts. Fun. Norm Quote
Ken_Potts Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007  It's good to see you've got indoor work to do Norm. I don't think I'll ever see snow again. It was over 70F here in North Carolina yesterday and I dearly wanted to go sailing but the wind refused to blow. Today was 50F and raining all day long (I'm not complaining, we're DESPERATE for rain).  Keep us updated on the mast construction and the snowfall. Hoping to make time this week to push them all through the table saw. These will help. I was hoping to get them for christmas, santa couldn't find them. Norman Colter Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 G'day All, Â Have all the staves tapered. Found a coffee can to be a snug fit for the base of the mizzen. This is a big help in dry fitting. Still looking for something for the main. While I was able to assemble the mizzen myself, if they had epoxy it would have been messy. Another set of hands will help with the wet fit. I'm using inner tubes as clamps. Norm Quote
Charlie Jones Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Norm- I have slices off of PVC pipes in various sizes that I use to corral the staves while I'm assembling. A 1 inch wide slice off of a 4 inch PVC pipe works well with 3 1/2 inch masts. I also use the same rings for drawing curves- gives me the same radius each and every time and I can choose the one that best fits the application. I have a whole stack of them I've accumulated, from 3/4 inch up to 4 inch. Quote

Nice to be doing things inside. With five pieces of inner tube, three pvc split rings and an extra set of hands I've gotten the main mast glued together. Actually only six of the eight joints.
