Belhaven #21 (someday)

Let me introduce myself. I am the proud future owner of Belhaven hull #21. I have been reading this forum on and off for a couple of years and have finally made the plunge and purchased plans.

I have been sailing for about 4 years, starting in a 12 sailing dinghy I made (one of Jacques' designs). Since then I have owned a 21 ft Clipper Marine and currently own a 24 ft Venture (MacGregor). I really don't like my current boat much (too big for effective singlehanding) and will be selling it for building funds.

I have been reading and re-reading the plans and have built a model as suggested by many. It was a big help in thinking through many of the steps that had me scratching my head while looking at the plans.

I am really looking forward to getting started building and I'm sure to have lots of questions for all of you.

Very nice model, very good detail also.

I like modeling, but I find (for myself) that the smaller it is, the longer it takes for me to finish it. :shock:

Hi, Larry. Congratulations on you decision to build the Belhaven. It's good to hear from another Okie on the board 8) . I live in Edmond also and have a Princess 22 built for me by Charlie Jones in Magnolia Beach, Texas. I'd be happy to show her to you - not the same as the Belhaven, but not all that much different, either.

We locals need to get together and talk boats sometime, or better yet, go sailing.

I'm planning a spring break sailing trip the middle of March to Matagorda Bay with my son and his two boys, ages 12 and 14. The youngest, Garrett, has the 8' dingy that we built last year that he will finish painting and take with us. He is very excited, as am I.

Yep. I believe there is around 320 sqft up with the staysail added. Lots of fun to use and very easy to set.

I think you may have posted about this before, but darn if I can find it... any idea what kind of speed you can squeeze out with the stays'l in light airs? I remember you mentioned long ago somewhere on this or another forum that the P22 doesn't make speed well in very light airs, but I think that was before you had the stays'l, IIRC.

Also, did you have Charlie increase the cabin height at all when he built Pilgrim? In the last pic posted above, your cabin looks a touch higher in profile to me than it looks on Chick's P22... but maybe my eye is playing tricks.

The staysail increased boat speed (the one time I really paid attention to the gps) from around 4 mph to around 6 mph. We had a light quartering breeze on starboard tack. I was surprised at how much difference the staysail made.

I think Charlie made the cabin sides to spec, but I think he said he got a little more crown out of the top, If I remember correctly. It may be an optical illusion somewhat due to the all white cabin sides and coamings vs. Chick's natural ones.

I love your model. I may build one of them next winter. Maybe a remote control version.

Hope you will keep us updated on your progress.

The wife doesn't know it yet but after we get our Belhaven done there will be a set of Core Sound 15 plans ordered. But thats another story.
