Adla, my present hoops are swaged. I don't see any way in this century that the cable would break, but I did have a few of the parrel beads break off. As Barry has pointed out, it would be pretty easy to cut a new bead in half and glue it in place. I have been wanting wooden hoops since the beginning and after the couple broke, I decided to upgrade. They were actually pretty easy. I first tried my adjustable circle cutter (the kind for a drill press with the single chisle), but it scars the puddin' out of me, so off to the lathe. I am sure it broke when the sail was let out on a downwind run. They don't like the little bump there is in moving side to side. Craig, you are eveil! Quote
Craig Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Yes Adla I did get a chance to recharge the old batteries. It was a wonderful day. I told the customer that all the aircraft were chartered up over the three day weekend, (bad boy, bad boy) so that is my next window if the Wx holds. I have much I want to do on the boat after lay-up but really want to get out one more time this year. Next summer is the seventh season on the Saralee and she will have met her design life requirement that I set before building. It was actually 5 years but the keel rework made me add two more years. At this time next year she and I will be even on time and $$ and everything after that is profit! ( Just a game I play with myself, an engineer thing about cost benifit and life cycle cost. I know I'm wierd so just bear with me.) If I can stay ahead of the routine maintanince and continue proper storage techniques on the off seasons this boat could last forever! The latex house paint on the hull could go a couple more seasons if I'd quit running her into things, oh, Mike you say thats what them plastic tube things in the cabin are for? I through them at the dock just before impact?? Now you say.... Anyway I am more than pleased with the longevity of these boats if well made and well maintained. Damnit, I have forgot the question again........ Quote

capt jake Posted November 1, 2005 Author Posted November 1, 2005 The shop is a mess at present. Fixing a canoe for somebody and the hoops aren't quite 'picture' ready. Mike is still in the same general location. He moved a few years back, but not far. I hear from him once in a while. I 'spose I should give him a call. Shane, you're not up them gronicles yet! You've just started! Best lesson I was ever taught involved a home improvement project, but the concept is aplicable to all things. You know where to start (you have the plans and have already started cutting) and you know where you need to end up (or want to end up). Just take the logical steps in between to get there. I think you a similar to me in the 'over-thinking' area. :roll: Sometimes it helps to set a pland and forge ahead. In nearly all cases, any errors you encounter can be remedied and added to the 'learning' bin. :) Quote
