what's the deal here?

it seems I can't get a rise out of anyone on this board anymore for information or just casual chatter. I have been and am a boat builder. I have a set of vacationer plans. is it the fact I have built something other than a stevensons design before? Is it because I have some plastic boats too? ( so does Frank) or is everyone afraid of booger? he's never bit anyone but me and swears it was an accident.

Wait a minute. it has just occurred to me that it may be the fact that I was the last person on this board to see the ex-sailmaker who's name I won't mention here or have seen since he came by for a meal. If I am being condemened for being compassionate and trying to help someone that's drifting toward the rocks then this is a sad state of affairs indeed . I would think you men in this boating community would be better than that and if it is the case would just come out and speak out honestly about it. this is just my opinion and as always the best to all. barnacle bill

Bill, don't take it too personally, things seem to slow down on the board in the winter (when I think it would pick up).

Me, I haven't posted much as I don't have much to offer presently.

I have several questions that have still gone unanswered, such is life on the board.

Likewise as Capt. Jake says. Things have been really slow around here. But from my end, I know nothing about the Vacationer and Weekender outside of building technigues, which I have not seen any inquires from you. I know nothing about what you speak about in your original post here. So if this has not been an issue around here, which I have not read since I have been on the boad, then I would express my thoughts as to " its just plain slow" on the board. Heck, the BBYB is even slower in responses, some sections being as stale as a month or two with a recent reply.

Don't worry about it. Most of us scan the board a couple times a day and look but don't see, if you will. I asked about curing epoxy before painting with Awlgrip last night and no one has answered. It's just that I am prettier than most of these Hosers and possibly younger than some. It is always slow this time of year and on into spring. Most of the folks live in the "hardwater" part of the country so boats arn't a year round affair for them.

Well you see grandpa here sometimes reads and then will return to the shop to ponder and plan a readable reply, which in the past many say that I am not always understood. So lately I have been making an effort to transpose my thoughts, if its something that maybe of past experience for me. If not, I most of the time keep my opinion to myself, which I have found to be more usefull in many cases.

here's another good tale. my college degreed son that lives 130 miles away at school called friday . " dad, my car won't start. what do I do" I tell him everything to check and then tell him it must be the battery. the wifey tells me to go take care of it for him as he knows no one in town. OK to keep harmony in the house I get up early and drive the 130 miles and take a new battery with me and pick him up and drive over to the car. yep, there it is with a dead battery sitting right in the advanced auto parts parking lot . go figure. I too, was one of the last ones to provide "He-who-must-not-be-named" with a bed and a meal. I gave up on the boat, AND even kicked the addiction. Yet these guys still respond to my off topic posts.

that is not all the tale really. he was there returning movies to the movie rental next door to the auto parts store. there was this huge sign in the window BATTERY SALE! FREE INSTALLATION I wish I had taken my camera and caught this kodak moment . I can't complain though he is a good kid . high school valdictorian , college scholarship, a 6 year biology degree in 4 and will have his master's this spring . he like so many young people nowadays go through life missing half of everything if it isn't on a dvd or computer screen. he will live and learn from experience I hope but sometimes she is a hard teacher at least she was for me.

I figured after the hurricanes there would be a lot of fixer upper glass boats for sale at bargain prices. see anything interesting in the papers? have a good evening. barnacle bill

Hey, barnacle5, no worries ... things get slow here, and sometimes people just pop in for a quick scan of the forums. During the holidays it gets even slower as people get involved in more "domestic" matters.

And the shot of Booger in the bow of the rowboat almost did make it into the calendar. I really like that one. I had to call in reinforcements this year to help with the judging. Man, it was hard deciding!

My daughter's first real job after graduation a few years ago was as a production chemist for a biotech firm (she has a BS in BioScience from UC Irvine). She had a couple of real eye-openers ... at first she couldn't understand how some of the longer term workers without degrees earned so much. Now she understands, after getting some recent graduates that had never learned anything about working for a living.

In the end, I think the best teacher is life itself. Your son will know the next time his battery dies. Whether he'll know how to deal with it is another matter. One can only hope! (I got a frantic call from my daughter about the toilet leaking, spraying water all over the bathroom, and the shut off valve was stuck ... I told her to turn off the water coming into the house. She was amazed that it shut off the toilet too.)

Things are pretty quiet all over. Just covered the boat for the winter - only got to take it out 4 times this year. Never did get to hook up with you this past season. BTW, I was one of the ones actually lucky enough to actually get a set of sails from that ex-sailmaker. Not much happening over on the other forum, either. I know there is a completed weekender now out in Mt Washington, and another starting here in town, so maybe things will pick up again. Booger would look real cool in the side car if you could get one of those old WWI leather pilot's caps and googles on him, not that he doesn't look cool already.

yes, he has goggles but won't wear them. he is pretty animated when we get rolling too. loves that bike. likes sailing but prefers to motor on the water too. can't go fast enough for him. must have racer blood in his veins. November is th eperfect time to sail on Green. I am planning to go thursday. uncover that boat and lets hook up or just drive up and sail with me. I helped a friend bring a partially completed wkender home this summer and he is completing it now. i have promised to help him swamp it too. take care and have a good wk. Bill

ps , yes , I am really sorry so many sailors didn';t recieve their sails too . I barely got mine after 9 months and then only a partial kit that I sewed myself and I had to rob an old set of sails for some of the missing hardware like the headboard and such. I already had thread and seam tape and grommets. great sail designer and technician though . not a good feel for business.

Yep, I had that one too ... even had it printed out, although the resolution wasn't the greatest on my ink jet printer. I was a little concerned about how it would print but didn't pick it for the final 12. I liked that one because it had the Titmouse in it, a design we don't see around here that often.

Do you have a higher resolution scan of it ... something on the order of 300kb in size or more?

I'll have to look. those pics were taken with a digital. I may have some off of 35mm . if I do I'll snail mail a couple to you. I built the titmouse about 15 years ago. sailed it hard the first 8 and then put it back in the barn until last year. barnacle bill's has been taking all my time. it is pretty true to sam's design but I used 2 X 8 on the bottom instead of the 1 inch stock and used a steel centreboard. she's a little heavier than designed but she carries it well and her 3 inch whiteoak stem will cut ice ( and has) . I have oftened contemplated building this same boat in an 18 footer . just multiply all the figures by 1.25 and stretch her a bit. but I already have the vacationer plans too. a lot to think about for sure. if i looked I could probably find some pictures of me when I had my sawmill getting the lumber for her out of the log(s) and I have construction photos too I can scan if you'd like to see them.
