kydocfrog Posted September 14, 2004 Posted September 14, 2004 If you are at the point of considering building a wheel or upgrading, check out www.shipswheels.com Nicely done, sturdy, brass hub with keyway. (No vested interest on my part. I believe the wheel on Charlie Girl II may have come from here, and it is quite nice. KyDocFrog Quote
capt jake Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Wow! At that price, why build one?? They look nice. Quote
Craig Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 The 25" wheel is the same as I used only this is $20 US cheaper. Good deal! Quote
adla Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 now this is posted...but i finally managed to build the wheel... adla Quote
rolandblais Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Buying a wheel is cheating! Besides, you can't buy a wheel this nice: But guess what, Adla, the wheel you made is just as nice, better even. Wanna know why? Because *you* made it... Peace, Roland But if someone's gonna buy one, make sure that it's the same diameter (or smaller) than the one spec'd for the plans. 25" won't work for a weekender, for example... Quote
adla Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 i did make it...and i used a technique i read in woodworker's journal to mix stains...i made the center out of birch and stained it to match the mahogany....don't have time today but i will post a pic soon..it is a mondo wheel... a. Quote
Steve Downs Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Good going Adla, I knew you could do it. I getting antsy to see some more of your work now that you are finished with classes and it's cooling off. Quote
adla Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 i'm gettin' antsy about getting back to it...i am such a petunia though! My dad called today and asked when i was going to get to it again...(i have been doing little things in the shop)...and i told him 5 more degrees or so...i am excited about the wheel...the bandsaw made all the difference. It cuts like butter. i wanna see your caned seats!!!! a. Quote
kydocfrog Posted September 16, 2004 Author Posted September 16, 2004 Ah, here I have gone and gotten myself in hot water; but what can you expect of a guy who buys a half finished Weekender... Wait till I can post a picture of the forward hatch I have to live up to... Roland; I really like the Cletic weave sort of format on your wheel ... so cool and unexpected. And I'd really like to see the caned seats too. What a unique idea. Quote
tdrown Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 I bought one very similar looking (probably the same manufacturer) for about that price on the boardwalk of Ocean City, MD. I also found a good deal on some other nauctical gifts and got a very nice model of a large gaff rigged sloop on the cheap. It was time consuming to sort through all the junk and find the bargins though, I must have visited nearly every gift shop. Quote
rolandblais Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 kydocfrog: Kevin Green made it. I think it's awesome. You can see more here: http://custompaperpocketyachts.k-j-g.com/vacationer/ Peace, Roland Quote
capt jake Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Has anybody ever bought from these folks?? Their website is a little lacking in my eye, but hey, maybe they are just getting into the internet??? I want to order a wheel. :) Or two..... Quote
adla Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 i have a pic of my recently epoxied (except for the place it was clamped) wheel...it is twice the wheel the plan calls for in thickness...*shrug*...i don't have the ring on the outer part on the front yet...the back is on and the front center hub thing will get a dragon symbol in gold leaf...for fun. a. Kudzu Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Nice wheel Alda. Man this motivates me so! I just can't wait to get started on mine! You guys have no idea how much I want to start building something other than a house! Quote
markfitz Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 I bought the 16" -- the nineteen was too big..they aren't bad -- I figured for 20 bucks I could afford to check one out. The problem I see is that the spokes are pretty tiny. And as the wheels get bigger, the spokes just get longer, not beefier. We'll see how long it takes to break one off. I guess I have no concept of how much stress will be on this thing. Any idea? Quote
RussMartin Posted September 22, 2004 Posted September 22, 2004 More wheels (sometimes same wheels, different vendor and/or price): http://www.woodchests.com/catalog.asp?actiontype=showCategory&category_idno=1202&menu_category_idno=1202 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43411&item=4310102514 http://www.stanleylondon.com/wheel.htm http://www.seashellcity.com/homedecor/homedecor7.html https://jaso.safe-order.net/shipslocker/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SL&Category_Code=Wooden+Ships+Wheels The last vendor has some exceptionally nice all-brass (nearly all brass?--pricey) items. An easier way to get to that last one: http://www.shipslocker.com/ Quote
