Just to further muddy the waters

I keep talking about Fir being less stiff across the outer grain in the three ply 1/4". What I havent mentioned is that its alot stiffer with the grain than okoume (longer fibers). I have also heard Meranti is alot stiffer than okoume. I really earned my pay when I folded the bow together, I think the guys who use okoume have a little easier time in this regard.

All things considered if I had it to do again I would still choose fir, but then I grew up with these trees so I am not totaly unbiased :-)

PJPiercey, you might want to chat with Barry; he is in Mukelteo (sp?) he is not too far from you. He was a former commercial builder (oops ) and me be able to help you out in your delema. I know he has helped me out in the past. :).

FWIW, If and when I ever start the BJ 24, I have decided it will be in Meranti; unless you folks tell me otherwise. :) A little more wieght might not be bad; heh Ray?? :).......... LOL ;)

I have used 1088 okume, 6566 meranti and 1088 meranti. I like the 1088 meranti the best of the three. personally I would not buy the 6566 meranti again. The sheets I received had horrible color and they seem to splinter more than the 1088. For the most part the 1088 meranti that I received from noahs was nice with a few areas that I didn't think would finish clear like I wanted. The meranti is a little stiffer and heaver than okume but I would not think twice about ordering it again.

If I was going to finish the project mostly brite I would call Noahs and ask if they could hand pick the sheets to match the best they could.

Noahs has been good to deal with for me.

What was it about the Okume that you did or did not like? I read your opinion and advice about the Meranti with great interest. I have and am still tempted to try some.

Greg its not that I dislike okume it's that I like meranti better. Meranti does not sand away as easy. When you fill screw holes if your not really careful with what your doing and also use a very easy sanding filler you will have a low spot at every screw with okume. I like the stiffness of meranti and the hardness. But if I was building a canoe and needed some really tight bends I might use okume. Really don't know though because of the hardness if you can make the bends it would be a more durable canoe.

I guess one other thing is everything I build I seem to try to make it as strong as possible ( within reason ) and the meranti just seems solid.

I used okume on my Penobscot 14 and it did fine but the color of the meranti I'am using is much more to my personal liking.

If meranti was the highest priced it would probably be the ply of choice. And if it was the higher priced it would still be my choice for most boats that I would like to build.

I don't want to ruffle anyones feathers This is just what I personally prefer.

Remember I am just a shade tree boat builder.

Your opinions about wood choices should not ruffle anyones feathers, but if it does, too bad. I appreciate your insight and sharing why you like different materials and what you have learned from applying them. I went with the Okume due to the lower weight, availability, and the designer's recommendations. Once I got my hands on some Okume, I found I like it a lot better than the ACX or marine firs common in my neck of the woods. Merianti will require special ordering and those darn high shipping costs. I am hoping to combine an order with some other local builders and save on shipping cost. When that happens I will definitely try the Meranti BS1088.

I also want to get my hands on some of the Keuring (spelling probably wrong) panels.

Thank you Scott. You make Meranti sound appealing even if I have to order it. Not being familiar with having plywood shipped and knowing you are from southern Indiana about what kind of cost am I looking at?

The total weight was right at 700 lbs. There was 18 sheets of 1/4" and 5 sheets of 3/8". The shipping to a yellow freight terminal in Evansville was $200. It would been $60 more to deliver to my house.

Thanks Scott. I received an email from Johnson's Workshop in South Bend, IN and they let me know that they can order Meranti for me so I will compare prices as soon as I put together a materials list. Of course I have to decide what boat to build.
