How do you deal with a Halyard pulley jam

I Was wondering if anyone has a fix for the peak halyard setup. According to the plans the point at the mast were the peak halyard hooks to the gaff via two pulleys on the same eyebolt. At this point I keep getting a jam up when the two pulleys start touching each other under tension. Has anyone else had this problem?

We had the same problem and I think we ended up with a double pulley up there instead of the two singles on the same eyebolt.

There's not enough room there for both on an eyebolt, IMHO. Some people have made it work by putting a large eyebolt sideways. I think a double block is a better way to go.

I tried the 2 pulleys and found they didn't work properly and went with a double pulley and there was no problem. I built a spreader for the stays also and found that I need to get a wider one as it still jams up sometimes.I think 9" is the minimum that you need to keep the gaff from catching on the stays.

I heard about two blocks having trouble, so I started with a fiddle block. I've heard some that find that acceptable, however I kept having that hang up, so I switched to a double. Didn't had any trouble with that so when I replaced all my harken blocks with homemade ones I used a double as well (as shown below)

Here's a pic of how Peter has his Weekender set up now.

As you can see, we're using a double pulley for the throat halyard and running a two-to-one purchase now. You could use a single w/becket.

At the deck we've got this going now:

The same set-up is used on the starbord side for the peak halyard so it can run back to the cockpit side.

I had the same problem, the two pulleys were rubbing together!! so I bought a quick link 1 1/2" that lowered one block and eliminated binding!!

I just used one block, with no problems, It hauls straight up as long as you keep the gaff low or level (haul it up last), this helps stop the mast hoops binding. the beauty of one pulley is that theres less rope involved (the halyard can be shorter) and when the gaff comes down ,you have 1 rope not 3 going up.

Good point Buck: The sequence of tightening the gaff is important. I've found that dropping the peak so the gaff is at least level makes everything much smoother-running.
