I follow you on here Jeff. I have never been on facebook, or even heard of G+ until I read it here. Of course I don't text, or have an I - phone or whatever either. I hunt with a bows, paddle a canoe, and even ride a bicycle now and then. My Grandson thinks I am antiquated. He on the other hand is up to date on all that kind of stuff, however when I asked him to describe a sunrise, he gave a look and a tilt of the head that reminded me of my Labrador Retreiver when she is confused.

Jeff is right on. Free B is a good marketing tool, and I reciprocated by purchasing my material and backband from him. This forum got me interested in the fuselage frame boats, and the free b plans got me drawing lines and cutting stock, and now that I have the book, there is no doubt that I will be back for more as time and money allow. My hope is our children and grandchildren will develop an interest. We can have building parties, and get the whole family on the water together, and maybe do some overnight river floats down the Chattahocee, and Coossa. I can dream can't I?

For stuff like that I use the tape to get everthing in place, then shrink wrap it. The rolls I use are around eight dollars at any of the big box stores last time I bought one. The glue doesn't adhere to the wrap, so it comes off easily. I use the technique often laminating all natural materials in my bow making endeavors. In this photo I was laminating two reflex deflex bows at once. You can see the roll of shrink wrap that is used by the blue cup. Pulling it tight three wraps, move over overlap three wraps and so forth applies pleanty of clamping pressure. In the photo the clamps are there just to induce the reflex and deflex, not for holding the laminates together, the shrink wrap is doing that. I use Urac 185, a gap filling glue made by Nelson Paints, it is water proof, and works well in boat building also.

Wow Dave, getting it done, and it looks so nice. Are you going to match the color scheme to your Curlew? Jeff mentionded in another post, a question regarding folks taking a poorly designed free design over one with a set of plans. He must have been refering to other designers, because I am not seeing anything poorly about the Free B 12 or 14. If he does end up offering these Free Bs on his site might I suggest calling them Busy Bs. NIce little boats that will keep you busy enough.

You could move that section to the top of this forum, and like PDoug suggested make it sticky at the top of the page. One stop shopping so to speak.

With enough exposure any wood can become toxic. I know other bow builders that have developed such a sensitivity to woods like Yew, Cedar, and Ipe, that they can no longer work with them, without harsh allergic reactions. One man actually went into respetory arrest working with Ipe, and if not for the prompt action of his wife, would have met God.

Dave, nice work! I would be interested on your experience, when you paddle your kayak with this laminated paddle, as opposed to the Greenland paddle you crafted?

Howdy Morley, and welcome aboard. I too have been trying find a local (or reasonably so) source for marine grade ply, live in Opelika. Closest I've found is Aircraft Spruce in Peachtree City, GA. Expensive as all get out though. I'm currently working on a Kudzu Craft design, and luckily found one sheet of marine fir at a local cabinet shop for twenty dollars. I have plans for the CS 15, a project that is on hold for now.

Those last photos really give it the wow factor. Once again nice work, and good luck with your fund raiser.

Take your time and don't over think it. Go with the flow so to speak. I have carved many, many, many hunting bows over the years, so working with a draw knife and hand plane is routine for me now. Didn't start that way though, hang in there.

Congratulations, fine looking craft.

Meant to post this photo, but forgot to add it.

Got a couple steps closer last weekend. Built the two saw horses, finished laying out the frames, and got them cut out. Need to purchase a 1/4 round over bit, and the material to build the strong back next time to the lumber yard. Didn't cut the arcs bettween stringers because I figureed the sixty grit belt on the stationary sander will make quick work of sanding to the line. That is all the progress for now.
