  1. For $200 you could attach a sack full of rubber bands to a prop or look for an old motor. Hmmmmm.
  2. They are beautiful. I really like the look of the wood masts.
  3. I too am curious about your rig. Looks like wood masts and booms. The trip looks like a grand adventure.
  4. Yep YEp almost time to get 'er wet.... Jest 'bout as much sawdust to go as ya got wood standin' there and yer all done!!! Can't wait to see ya sailin'.
  5. It's a great adventure to be sure! Those boys will surely tell the story over and over each time with embellishment. In 2025 Huricaine Beryl may be legendary for the tremendous surf it created while they were runnin' afore it on their way back from Ireland!
  6. I also built my CS17 out of Meranti. It is probably heavier, but she sails fine for my purposes. I have never used Okume but I hear that Meranti is stiffer than Okume when it comes to making bends. I did find the wood stiff. I did not ,however, have any problem with the bends in the bow of the CS17. If, as you observed with your hammer test, Meranti is tougher, that would be a definate plus for my sailing locations. All the lakes in Georgia are very low right now.
  7. Not long before time to get her wet!! She really is a grand vessel.
  8. That looks like a really good time had by all. And what a place to sail!! Are your masts painted?
  9. CS17 "Sunshine" Please. (ya don't have to put please, my momma jus raised me right.)
  10. Back when I was livin on the Black Warrior River just around the bend from the Tenn-Tom waterway in LA (lower Alabama), there was a barge that came through town two or three times a year loaded with campers and trailers. People would pay to get a space on the barge and cruise the country. I'm sure they would let you put your container on there. Might have to bring your own forklift though.
  11. Awesome canoe. She looks like she won't need that mast box to make her go. Just put her in the water and all the stares will push her along!!!
  12. Thanks Graham. I wondered when my sprit was pulling down if it had to do with the location of the block. It probably had more to do with the amount of line I had sheeted in.
  13. Is there an advantage of having the block suspended from the sprit over having it attached to the sprit with an eyestrap? I did notice on one occasion the sheet seemed to be pulling the sprit down toward the transom. With the last set of adjustments to the rig, that problem disapeared. Just wondering.
  14. I cannot really see your picture. I tryed two things. First, just tied a piece of 5/16 yacht braid around the sprit and tied the block on. Not a good way to do it. What I ended up with is an eyestrap attaching the block to each sprit. The eyestrap on the mizzen is positioned just above the blocks on the stern which lead the sheet to the cockpit. So far this has worked well for me and is easy to set up.
  15. Exciting!!!!! I have really enjoyed following your progress Scott. It will be a joyous occasion when your Belhaven gets wet! I would really like to see pictures of your varnishing. You do excellent work and it is great to see.
  16. All this talk about a nuclear Core Sound! What's the point of uranium if ya aint got a reactor? :?
  17. How would this information apply to sprit boom sails? Say the kind found on my humble CS17. I Imagine the leach telltales would be of most use and should be placed to split the sails approximately into thirds?
  18. I wish this thread had been here when I built my CS 17 hull. I don't want to try to add to the wisdom expressed here except to reiterate the part about the middle four feet or so being the part which will not likely want to join together. Just make sure to have a camera handy when you open it up for the first time. It is the part I remember most about building Sunshine. It goes instantly from being a couple of pieces of plywood on the floor to something you can actually tell is going to be a boat.
  19. Well thanks for the incouragement and advice Oyster. I have already reserved my campsite at Lake Hartwell for the Sailstice thing!! I am very excited about going to participate in such events.
  20. That looks like a great place to sail in the summer time.
  21. Did ya get nervous punching that first hole in your sail?
  22. I went out again yesterday to lake Alatoona this time. We launched from a sheltered cove just around the point from the ramp. When we got to the main part of the lake winds were strong and gusty. She sailed very fast and stable. When it came time to head back, I tryed to get back to the ramp. We would start on the other side of the lake and be able to head straight for the ramp. When we would get to the same point in the sail back, the wind would shift and push us away from our destination. I am going to have to expedite this motor thing. It would really make life easier.
  23. Yer still vulnerable from the stern, just like the rest of us!! Arrgh!
  24. Or give her a broadside from the stern! Arrrrgh
