  1. quite often I cannot see the wood for the trees, the ability to come here and gain from the wealth of experience is priceless. MM
  2. Glad I was able to help for a change, it's usually me asking the questions. MM
  3. No need of a dado blade for the birds mouth, I use a $9.97 freud diablo 7 1/4" 24 tpi in place of the 10". Practice cuts made on scraps to the same diamentions of staves, once your dialed in it takes no time. I made one for my core sound 17 with taper to 1.5". using straight grain douglas fir. Came out at 27 lb.Os I now have the aluminium masts at 12.7- 13 lb. think I can still reduce birdsmouth weight but not to the level of aluminium. May use that mast for a tradisional rig (Gaff, balanced lug) in the mid mast step position, just out of interest. MM
  4. for the bottom of a kayay that will see contact with rocks, oysters and other such damaging components,Iv'e had my best results with just a grafite mix. My goto boat has 3 years of running rocky rivers and with an occasional touch up looks just fine. One by product I found was the ability to glide over large area's of moss/weed that my buds had to work through and i didn't. MM
  5. Well she got splashed last night, put her in about 5ish took quite a while to rig, had to do that at my dock rather than at the ramp as I need to do a fair bit of tree pruneing Had to motor out of my creek area before raising the sails, then the wind completly died on me off to the north I see the dark clouds of the front so I'm determined to spend some time on the water now I'm here so good time to learn how to reef whilst on the water. Discretion being the better part of valour ( read chicken) I went with the maximum double reef on main and mizzen. No sooner than I got that done when here comes the wind out of the north, by gps even fully reefed I was enjoying a downwind run at 6.5 mph. you can see the leading edge of the front to the south Ran south for awhile playing and getting a feel for the boat, then about face and do some tacking into the wind still managing a respectable 5+ mph. Played until it got dark then sail to creek entrance, douse the sails and motor on in against the wind, and unrig at the dock in the dark (thankfully good moonlite between breaks in the cloud). so a good 1st impression, couple of minor things to improve sail contol and make up some weather protection for camping aboard then put in some real time. MM
  6. As Tehani pionts out the belt sander has limited use but the ROS gets lots of work my Makita one hander is my goto though, plus it pays to have a couple of spare hook & loop backing pads, they do wear out and send perfectly good sanding pads flyinf off into the wild blue yonder!! aslo handy for building a supply of wood flour for fillets, and yes quite often the tried and true hand sanding is the way to finish. MM
  7. thank you very much for promt replies guys, heading to the hardware store (again) !! MM
  8. OK nearing the end,but have a question, how are you attaching sail track to the aluminium masts?. Stainless sheet metal screws would seem the easy answer but talking with Graham he warned of corrosion problems. MM
  9. Well I went with 6oz cloth, strength (Standing on upper deck) being the main reason and protection for the soft western red cedar second, Iv'e finished my kayaks/canoes this way and has proven durable and still looks good given the 5' rule Not long ago got off the phone with Carla, my sails are on the way, fedex in Fort Worth as I type (pick at the keyboard)so hope for monday delivery, the time to start rigging before I get on the road to Oklahoma. MM
  10. I like that as well, but with all new seals,"O" rings etc I hope not to see that any time soon. MM
  11. Yesterday was 1st day on the trailer and out of the shed, now I can see her wrinkles, these will have to wait, I still plan on going to Sail OK with her if my sails arrive in time ( told they'd been shipped to New Zealand by mistake). The trailer was from an 18' bassboat, but this baby fits on there with no room to spare. So now decks are trimmed, planed and sanded and 1st epoxy coated prior to glassing. Also stepped mainmast for test fit all good, very happy with getting to this piont wish I had more time, rudders to paint/fit, out board to set up,before rear deck is installed, start some pre rigging etc. MM
  12. I ran the mast drain through the hull, the plastic tubing in the picture is at the bow, going in at an angle, slightly through the mast step and into the bottom of the mast bearing/sleeve.I then slathered goopie around the tubing using "it" as the form/mandrel. then finished off with a pure epoxy pour into the base to act as a watertite seal/bearing surface for the mast. Hope that makes sence. Monday drove back to Austin (hate city traffic)to Parks & Wildlife paid $53 for 2 year regisration and $27 for title, so the total outlay to legitemise(sp) a home built in Texas is a grand total of $120.00. Also picked up all new bearings/oil seals for my (new to me) trailer, never had a trailer where the bearings run in an oil bath before.Thats all back together now and hope to have the boat on it in the next couple of days. MM
  13. Well the masts and sail track came as well as my deck plates, hindges ect so mast bearing/sleeve made up and installed, also added the drain as recommended.Fwd seating goopied in, Picked up some Mahogany for the thwart which is now ready to install when painting completed, plus rub rails cut scarfed but not finished, now working on fairing masts for sail track, making wood top mast extention, plus some of the blocks for rigging, hope to have decks on and glassed in a day or two, and Carla is chasing down my sails, getting close. Plus last week Tx Parks & Wildlife did my inspection,so now I'm totaly legit, when paint dries the # can be applied ! MM
  14. That is one fine looking boat, I'd be as proud as a peacock if I had done such work. Stunning. MM
  15. Great I love Tri's,wanted to see this one since I 1st heard mention on this forum, working diligently toward having the Core Sound done, but having doubts (can't make Epoxy/paint dry Any quicker) Also have boat trailer blocked up waiting on new seals/ O rings, new bearings /races done yesterday (where does the time go !!) Just received a package from Duckworks with what I hope is all the rope, cleats ect I'll need to rig. MM
  16. Many thanks Docpal, after a quick call to Graham I made up the reamer as he suggested and after a couple of hours both masts are a snug fit. Was able to make up the mast bearing as well, so hope to be on target for the end of month, again thank you. MM
  17. Folks just received my aluminum mast sections and I'm kinda racing time to be done by the 1st week in Oct for the Sail Oklahoma event, so my question is what's the most effiecent way/equipment to ream the lower section to accept the uppers. My search didn't reveal any results. Thanks MM
  18. To the bast of my knowledge the nearest supplier of marine ply to you would be, Austin fine Lumber and plywood 9407 brown lane, Austin, Tx 78754 512 836 8990 As far as epoxy I always use US Composites and primarily use the slow harder, but do have a bottle of the fast for the few days its cool enough to use, very rare this year. I should have prefaced this by saying I'm In the Tx hill country, so similar conditions. MM
  19. Well thats encouraging, spent all day yesterday planing, with more to come, almost down to 3 and 1/4 inchs. MM
  20. I'll be there, maybe have my core sound finished ( I hope ) if not there's always my little Tri. Last year was my 1st visit and probably the mosy fun trip of the year, great folks and good family fun. MM
  21. Randy thanks for reply. I also used douglas fir and birdsmouth consruction, I did add blocking at the snotter attachment area and the lower 3' of the mast, still have a good amount of sanding to do and it's at 20' right now, wishful thinking I can approach 20 lb though this is before final glue up showing the blocking.
  22. very very nice, really like the wood masts, what wood did you use and what is the weight, I only had fir available and my 1st mast came out at 32.5 lbs, not easily handled. MM
  23. To date only the underside of the decks are glassed, when I have the mast tubes installed the decks will be goopied on then glassed overall including 2'' overlap on the hull before the rubrail goes on. I have built several kayaks/canoes doing strip stich & glue with good results. I do have the hull stringers fwd of the bulkhead but have omitted the after ones as the hull is glassed inside & out. I also installed another bulhead just aft of the main mast step and this will be another air chamber with a 8'' deck plate on topside for inspection/air circulation when on trailer. After a lot a frusration trying to obtain the aluminum with the specified wall thickness,I called Graham to verify specs and he said he had plenty in stock !! could have saved a lot of time and frusration never would have thought to try Amazon
  24. she is heavier as a result of all the extra glass but I hope that pays off on the maintenence side.Turning is a slow methodical affair on one's own. While waiting on masts, sails, deck plates, piano hindges ect, Iv'e completed the CB, rudder and tiller (Not finshed/painted yet).Decided I would strip the decks and finish them bright, this took a while as 3/4'' wide * 3/8'' thick did not want to take the bend so went with 3/8'' width lot more time and effort but it's done now and glassed and to install after mast tubes are in.
  25. been quite a while since last post on 342 but she's moving along despite the hot weather. Hull is fully glassed inside and out, seat lockers/air chambers all rough cut/dry fitted as are fwd deck beams ect.Bottom has 4 coats epoxy/grafite, sides primed cutting opening for CB trunk.and glassing in lower trunk. My birdsmouth mast although it came out good is on the heavy side (32.5 lbs)so Iv'e ordered the alumium so I can manage set up on my own,may use the wood mast for a lug or gaff rig set in mid mast station we'll see on that. Also have the sail track and sails ordered, so waiting on those items now.
