Randy C. Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Well, it only took 4 years 4 months, but it's finally done. The first sail was pretty uneventful, winds 5-10. Sailed for @3 hours without any problems. Thanks to everyone for all the advice, all very helpful. Randy C. Quote

Randy C. Posted September 6, 2012 Author Posted September 6, 2012 Thanks for all the kind words. The mizzen is 19'. Jim, it really became a struggle at times to keep going. I'm used to working on projects that take a weekend or two. I'm GLAD it's done. It really is a lot of fun to sail. When we were loading it on the trailer my 8 year old grandson asked me, "what are you doing next Sunday grandpa"? Quote

MM I seem to recall with fir one can reduce birds mouth scantlings by 20% - 25% to save weight. Quote

I also used douglas fir and birdsmouth consruction, I did add blocking at the snotter attachment area and the lower 3' of the mast, still have a good amount of sanding to do and it's at 20' right now, wishful thinking I can approach 20 lb though this is before final glue up showing the blocking. You might be surprised how much it will lighten up by the time you get done hand planing to make round. I also added blocking where the snotter goes, and also the bottom and top. Randy Quote
