multiple boat royalties

Hey Jeff, it is clear that for building boats one buys the plans for that for the 2nd and subsequent boats, when no duplicate plans are needed that a simple 2nd boat fee is the procedure. What are your expectations for designs included in your book, like the Curlew, where the customer lofts the frames from the included off-sets?

Dave, it's my understanding is that once published a plan can be used at will with no fee's attached. I have had individuals that wanted to build two Curlews contact me and I have never accepted their offer for a second boat fee.

In the case of a commercial venture where they are built for resale I am not sure how this applies. What I would like is if someone paid me the a royalty for each one they built. $25 seems reasonable to me.

I will send you the royalty for the 2nd Curlew. I plan on making patterns so the first of any boat will be the plans, and the 2nd boat fee for any after that. $25 is very reasonable. I also intend on buying most if not all of the non-wood supplies from you. Your prices are very reasonable and checking off boxes on a web site is my idea of the best way of running errands for boat building. I will still have to drive a whole 15 minutes to pick up my Alaskan Yellow Cedar, but I will endure.

Just sent you an email. I just ran out of fabric! I have doubled my stock and then I had someone order fabric for 10 boats for an upcoming class for kids. I opened the spare roll and the first 60' are bad, has a hole dead center ever 6' and I just had to trash it. So once again I find myself waiting on fabric. I guess I am going to have ...what .. quadrupedal my orders now. UPS man is gong to hate me!

Hope they get the fabric to you fairly fast since I'm going to start skinning the Castaway Thursday. By the way, you were right, one roll of sinew was slightly less than enough, but I did undo a couple of screw ups and redid them. I think my fingers will be sore for a month. There's nothing like getting the frames together and seeing the boat for the first time.

You guys just use to much sinew. I can do a 18' boat with one roll no problem and part of another one.

I haven't looked at UPS tracking but I am sure the fabric will be here Friday or Monday. It takes 5 days typically. I have doubled up and been buying 2 rolls at a time. As soon as the 1st one is nearly gone I order two more. But had 60 feet that was damaged. Then the Eli Whitney Museum order150 feet plus I had a spring rush or orders. Sort of the perfect storm. I think I have two roll ends with less than 12' on each one that is useless! Oh, and 60 feet of scrap!

Damaged fabric ...no wonder you wanted to know what to do with left over fabric.,...Can you get compensated for the bad fabric?

I probably could have finished with one roll of sinew but someone said that if it was to look professional, all of the knots needed to be on the same side. Interestingly enough, I kept finishing the lashing on my right side no matter which side of the boat was being worked on. Since I figured that this guy might see my boat one day and know that I'm a champion goof up, I cut them loose and relashed them. It was really hard breaking myself from tieing off on the same side no matter where I was lashing. Lesson learned.

I hope I never go to such tedium as to insist on all my knots being on the same side. I don't line up the slots on my screws either. Actually, the lined up slots practice is a very bad one. It means you over tighten some screws, or loosen others in the process of alignment. The lined up knots at least is just insanity.
