When cutting a scarf joint for a stringer or the gunwale, which is the best way to cut, A or B??

I hear arguments for both and I don't know that it matters? I do my 'B' style because it is a little easier to clamp together.

Your drawing is not to scale I assume but just in case, the B angle looks to shallow. It should be longer than A. Angle doesn't change with width.

Anyone have a rule of thumb for the angle to use when cutting a scarf joint? I'm figuring somewhere between 10-20 degrees?

If you search the forums you will find 8 to 1 ratio listed. One inch stock, eight inch scarf. Hope that helps. Have fun.

I agree with one minor caveat, at least 8:1 not less.

I fed the ratio into my calculator and came out with around 7.9 degrees. So I guess anything between 5-8 would work.

I don't even try to measure angles like that. I find it very inaccurate. I have drawn out scarf cuts using the ratio method and cut them by hand when I only needed a couple. For my kayak I will likely build a simple version of the table saw jig Jeff shows in his book.
