Newbie checking in S12 #882 and CS20 #142

Hello everyone, I just wanted to stop in and say hello. I`m at the very beginning . I am building a Spindrift 12 and a CS20. The Spindrift will be the practice boat and I hope to have her done by late spring. Also once the Spindrift is in the water I wont be so impatient to get the CS20 done in a rush. The CS20 will start in the fall. I have plywood. Epoxy and tape should be in sometime this week. In the mean time I`m cleaning out my garage/workshop. Today I built the circular saw scarfing jig(woodenboat magazine) and it turned out nice. I sold my last boat 7 years ago and I miss the water. I live in western PA 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. I have built 1 boat years ago, an 8 foot hydroplane from Glen-L or maybe it was Clark Craft??? Since then my skills have been home remodeling and hobby furniture making. I`m an amateur and a little apprehensive but thanks to some great websites and the info here I should have a good boat in a few months. Pictures will follow.

Welcome Glenn. I think your plan to practice on a Spindrift is a good idea if you haven't built a boat in quite some time. Should be sufficient to get your stitch and tape skills up to speed so that you're well prepared for the CS20, and the Spindrift looks like a great little boat in its own right. The CS20 is a lot of boat, so there will be a few moments when you're handling some large panels that will make you wish for several people to help, but otherwise, most of the same techniques apply. Best of luck on the build. Remember to share pictures!

Welcome Glenn. It would certainly seem that what ever skills you are lacking now will be acquired/developed as you proceed with your builds. This forum is a great place to get the encouragement and answers to get you through the tough spots. Have fun with the building. Most here find it close to if not as much fun as the sailing when the boats are done.

From the sound of it you are probably less than 2 hours away. I get up to Pymatuning pretty often and CABBS (The Cleveland Amateur Boat Building Society) has ties with the 3 Rivers Chapter of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association and the Moraine sailing club at Lake Aurthur. Stay in touch help is just a shout away and maybe we can see you on the water at one of the above aforementioned group outings. Accept the following as an invitation to visit my shop in Parma Ohio, you can even help sand on my CS 17

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words Wes,Dave and Jim. Well my epoxy,tape and mixing/measuring stuff should be here soon. My garage is still a mess and I hope to get it cleaned out this weekend. The easiest way to clean a garage is to haul everything out pitch what needs to be pitched and neatly find a place for everything. Snow and/or rain for the last month or so has hampered my progress. My garage is 12x24 , more like 12x18 considering the work bench and stationary items. Once this place is clean and I can get started in an organized way I will commence the S12. Let me try to upload a picture.

Also I found Wes` CS20 website a fantastic resource. I`d like to do the same type of "chaptered" blog, of my build, to help those interested in the Spindrift construction. I`ve never written a blog so if someone knows a good "free" , 'build a blog site' I`d like to try my hand at it.

Not sure about blog software... Frank (the administrator of this site) might be a good resource to ask. I've played around very briefly with Blogger (blogger.com) and WordPress (wordpress.org). But I haven't used either one well enough to form a preference or a good impression of their capabilities. I know a lot of people who use them. My own site is all hand-coded in HTML because I learned it long ago and like having total control over layout.

Your garage makes me smile. That's a MAN's garage, to be sure. If you don't have one, be sure to pick up a cheap motorcycle cover for the bike, or you'll be having to clean it every day to wash off a thick coat of sawdust and other debris. My poor bike suffered a lot during the recent dodger build because I forgot to use the cover. I've washed it twice this week before I finally went rooting through the attic to find the cover again.
