What are we hoping to build in the next 5 years?

Hi Gang,

As I was reading the thread on what we are currently building it struck me that it would be interesting to ask what each of us hopes to build in the next 5 years or so.

I plan to build my Spindrift 12, then two Divas for my two youngest sons, then a Princess Sharpie 26 to play with during my retirement years.  This is my hope anyway ;D.

Pretty aggressive build schedule there! 

I'm considering building a couple of kayaks ... either the Little Dubber and Big Dubber (I have plans for one of them, so I'd owe Peter Hunt $15 for the second build), or a couple of Birders (and get my wife involved in building hers). 

I also have plans for a little two seater run-about, the Glen-L Squirt, that I think would be a hoot to drive around the local area. 

My new job is less time-intensive and my back is doing OK, so I'm finding some more time.  I'm in the middle of a bathroom cabinet project, but after that I can probably get back to building some small boats.  I hope!

(OH, and I still have that Spindrift project, but I just have the centerboard done).

Next is an Oldshoe with a convertble top to go with the Shoebox (see avatar) that's been sitting around my basement shop mostly done for a few years. Would like to do a Microtrawler as I've got a nice Merc 50 and my wife likes that boat after getting a tour of Blacksmith's. My dream (as of now) is a Bolger St. Valerie, but that probably goes beyond 5 years!

Two mouseboats for the kids and a Kayak for the wife (my marching orders!).  Then I may build a shallow draft camp cruiser row/sail that is a little bigger than my Little Gem.  Currently looking at the Light Trow amongst others.

In the next five years I hope to be building a strip planked centerboard gaff rigged sloop of my own design.  It is called "The MeerKat"

Interesting name, "Meerkat." Looks pretty cool.

I saw a Riva today at the boat yard. It is a late 50's product and it is just coming out of a major overhaul/refit. About 25 feet long and absolutely beautiful. There is a pair of 427 Chevies in the boat and she ought to move right along with all of that power.

That sighting inspires me to look at the Glen-L "Biscayne 18," or something like it as a future project. However, that may be a bit more than what I can build in the garage. Maybe I can find some sort of shop to build my boats in around here.

Oh well, it's nice to dream.

I'm hoping to complete the Princess 28 design with Graham Byrnes and build one within the next five years. The goal is the maximum size cruising boat that is reasonably trailerable. The ease of handling the cat ketch rig, dropping the masts for bridge clearance and trailering, and the shallow draft should provide lots of interesting cruising with long distances accomplished at 60 mph.

Graham has produced the basic hull shape. Below are my sketches based on the hull lines. It will be interesting to see how much of this Graham can incorporate into the final design.

Steve that design came about becuase of my desire to have a friendship type sloop that was trailerable.  In there are ideas from the friendship sloop, the weekender, a wherry and a melonseed skif and even from the balboa 20.

The design was named after a friend/formunite from the WBF that passed over the bar this year.

Golly! I just hope tp finish my minicup in the next 5 years!  I do have plans for a Birder, a CS-17 and a Weekender.  Think I will live long enough!

I think the boat building journey is a lot more fun than the actual finished boat, which is also a lot of fun.  Hard to find a downside.  If you build just one boat in a life time, it is a memorable journey, even if it never ends.
