TIM MAUSER Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 I am pleased to announce the launching of CS-20 #53, Abiento. on May 27, 2007. Sailing Pictures to follow. I appreciate all the assistance provided by the Messing-about B&B site, its members and especially Rob Blackburn, Terry Dunn (thanks for the ride!), Ray Frechette and Graham. The plans were purchased for my 50th birthday, 9/9/53, work commenced in 2/2004 and I basically worked on it consistently through May. I installed a 5 hp 2 stroke Mercury engine, standard sail plan with sail tracks, open cockpit design, with R. Blackburn's anchor rode bulkhead, a 3/4 inch transom, and masts extended 18 inches Missen and 24 inches Main ( I do not like eating sails and hardware) being the only major deviations from Graham's Plans. Not being an active sailor, some crew on a E-22 20 years ago, I was apprehensive about single handing , but I got the hang of the twin sail configuration immediately. It is quick, slick and fast. After the first sail I was told by the dock crew that they were betting on when I'd go over. Apparently they thought I was sailing way too aggressively on my passes through the mooring field. Wind 10 knots gusting to 20, I let ride till it got on its gunwale and simply eased the main, all the while maintaining a straight course. Can anyone tell me how to convert to the appropriate size? My actual address is Ipswich Massachusetts, which coincidentally is the home of Norm Coulter who is working on a Princess. Tim Mauser Quote

It soulds like we started building at about the same time - I'm glad to hear there is somebody else who works at a similar pace - I'm nearing launch time myself so your posting has me chomping at the bit. I don't know what would be best for re-sizing photos but there is a program available for download called "gimp". I'm pretty sure it will do what you need and I think it is free. Quote

Tim Mauser[/quote'] First, see if right clicking on the photo brings up a menu that includes a "make thumbnail" option. Some people have it by default in Windows XP. You can add that capability to Windows XP with the MS Power Tools . I actually prefer a freeware program called EZ Thumbs, available at Fookes Software , which allows you pre-set the size and then use the right click menu and select "Open with" and choose "EZ Thumbs" to automatically create a thumbnail. Use either 300 x 400 or 400 x 600 as the size, and you'll have a good size for uploading to forums. Quote

I bet you were setting up expectations by saying you hadn't sailed in a long time, etc., etc., and then blew them away by sailing so well in interesting winds. A credit to your ability and to Graham's design. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos. I just take my photos into Photoshop and crop them down. Then I save them at the lowest file size that I can. That get most of the extraneous stuff out of the photo and gets it down to size at the same time. Enjoy that boat. Make any minor tweaks you need and then sail it as much as you can. Have a great time with her, Steve Quote

JeffM Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Wow, Tim! You move your center of effort up that far, went out in 20kt winds and STILL stayed upright??? After a few sails in much less wind with a shorter rig, I reduced my rig height roughly to the design! Single-handing in 10-15 had me constantly spilling wind. Congratulations on the new boat! Quote
TIM MAUSER Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 Hi Jeff: Just a quick note, went out in 10kt with gusting to 20kt, in relatively protected water. I don't mind pushing the envelope a bit but it will be a long while before I'm comfortable much above 10kt steady. Still I was very impressed how fast it de-powers on release of the Main. Had my son and a friend of his out with me on Saturday before the weather deteriorated, 5/7 knots estimated, both boys were quick students, its an easy boat for a 10 year with moderate experience to sail with supervision. Angus has had 3 years of Opti / sail camp. In anticipation of our current gale, I pulled the boat off its mooring yesterday afternoon at the start of some truly awful weather high wind and rain, (Soccer had the morning priority), went up the Ipswich River under motor power, she did very well despite contrary winds and a falling tide. Have a 5hp Mercury 2 stroke. Once I get some more time sailing we should try to get together. Tim Mauser Quote
