Guest Oyster Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 but ain't no fancy dancy Devlin stuff, but this is where I am and progressing along after the vicious attack a few months ago. I am ready for the finish work on my 23 round stern, "Popsicle" and hopefully will have it all nice and showy come summer time hoepfully the first of June. This is the outer skin of cedar, yes some larger knots, but they will be dutchmaned before the primer goes on the hull. I am a bit cramped for space right now. But as soon as I finish my new deck, fuel tank and paint job on my fiberglass skiff, I will move it out and slide the sailboat back in working position, hoping that the weather will be just right. I am moving right along on the new 22' Simmons rebuild, around the "air" as someone told me last month. HEHE! I have the initial plank patterned up, one being the full size and the other one being the actual lap deminsion, that I will use as a gauge to plank to, applying it to the new chine plank, making sure the seams will be correct. Yep, a bit of jibberish, I know, but I want the sides and hull to be correct, as the original one, as much as possible. I think Capt. had publisned the original 1958 hull. I saved the old sides and I am in process of making patterns for them. This is the fiberglass hull that I have taken completely apart, including the sides, which this hulls are completely foam filled and was full of water. I have fabricated new stringers up foward and will be removing the aft section and transom to update those parts which are also water logged and then finish the glassing of the parts. Quote

Actually I laminated two layers of 1/2" fir plywood' date=' now being skinned with Occume, making up a one inche transom. laying off the perfect curve, middle of the multiple shape that makes up the stern. I do leave a small piece intact till I get the transom and bottom in place and fastened up. I am also making patterns for the jig, [yep old fashion CNC router work, hillbilly style'] for the new sistership of the provided shot of the runabout. Sorry no pictures yet. Today I did put in 72 plants for spring lettuce, brocoli and kohlrabi, all from geminated seeds. We also have sugar snap peas going, multiple plants and this year a metal trellis. Quote

Designed by Graham Byrnes who lives a couple miles from the shop where this first one is being constructed. It has the classic Harker's Island flare and should be a nice addition to Graham's plan list. It's being built in the favored Outer Banks construction method of laminated occume ply and epoxy. Graham and crew are leaving in about 2 hours for this year's 300 mile Everglades Challenge taking off for Key Largo from St Petersburg. And here I sit with plans for a 20,some nice 4 and 6/4 mahogany and the plywood just a truck ride across the state. This could really start something down here,ya know? Then I read the dates after seeing the reference to Graham leaving on the Everglades Challenge Just shows you what happens when you don't get on the site for a while. Shame on me. The flare on that boat looks pretty nice. I think that will be quite a nice boat. How are the projects doing these days? I'm sure you have at least three or four more going by now. Steve Quote

Guest Oyster Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Well Steve, Craig, et.al. its very important to have numerous projects taking place at all times, to be the most efficent in today's world of maximizing and not waste any moment in our limited life. 8) I have completely finished the Mary Carter on the 20 footer, in great anticipation of our Florida trip. I have also finished the decking and transom on the snot boat. I have also readied the bottom of the Simmons for securing the planking, since the fasteners arrived yesterday. I have also transfered the 20' patterns for the new jig frames and fixed frames, but have run out of time to do much else, while making ready the vehicle and trailer for the extended trip beginning Sunday. I will also, upon a lot of projects here, including Mike's reclaimed boat, will be looking foward to seeing the Bolger hull in plain view hopefully before I leave or at least see the completed project upon returning from the long overdue R&R for my bride. Enough of the issues of hazardous drugs and slow but unavoidable alternatives such as death. After 31 years overall, and 26 years of sacrificing for others, its time for a few hours of leisure for herself. The job has run aground. Quote
