Building a dingy

I'm not sure if anyone here uses a dingy with their weekender. I was thinking of building one that could be used for some lake sailing/fishing/rowing. I wonder which boat would be more preferable for this. I was thinking of maybe a pram that was on www.duckworksmagazine.com or something like the skiff/rowboat un unclejohn's.com. I saw some free plans for a 1 sheet skiff but it's small. I am thinking of modifying it to be 10' long and 42" wide. If anyone has built their own dingy I was curious what you chose to build.

I really like the B and B designs as well. I think the nesting feature is a worthy consideration for a tender.

I also thing the following might be a worthy consideration and a lot of fun to build.

Although I think the Classic 10 or Classic 12 would be my first choice of designs from them. :wink:

My brother recently moved from the Portland area to Tucson and wanted something that he and his wife could cartop easily and take rowing or sailing or even just exploring with a small electric trolling motor.

So I sent this to him. He was enthralled with the Classic 12 and ordered the kit. He got it a couple weeks ago and is busy cutting up mahogany for frames etc. He will probably apply a double skin to it and paint it. But sailing is a primary consideration for both of them along with light weight and rowing ease. 8)

So I figure I'll get to try it out first hand and make a decision on building one. :wink:

The idea of a 12' tender for a 17'ish with 6+" yacht draught strikes me as funny!

Stevensons themselves designed the perfect for the Weekender: its called the Amphora and its in a children's book with the same name . Its about 7' and built along the same lines, It uses a few sheets of ply and looks very cute. I haven't finished mine yet. You can propaly pick up the book through Amazon 2nd hand stores or your local libary

There are no plans available, but there are occasionally second hand copies of the book on Amazon. You can go there thru the forum and if you purchase anything a small percentage helps Frank to offset the costs of providing such a great place to meet. :wink:

Sorry, but I keep coming up with books on building an underwater research boat. Can you help locate the plans for the little dinghy?

Greg, Go to abebooks.com. They had about 5 or 6 different booksellers who had a copy of "The Amphora". Prices ranged from 15 to 25 dollars. After you get abe, search for the book by name. By the way The boat was designed for underwater research with a glass bottom.

I did go there and to Amazon and found what you are referring to. As I said before, the books I found keep referring to some sort of underwater research boat, and that confused the issue greatly. Thanks for clearing this up for me. I think I will check the local library prior to buying this book. It seems too much like a "pig in a poke" to me now.
