The proceeds will go towards support of messing-about.com. How to submit an entry: I already have an entry from Larry Jacobson, who burned the image onto a CD to mail rather than email. If you want to do that, email me for the snail-mail address! Or, email your entry to frankhagan@ev1.net What can you submit? Your entry should feature some aspect of boatbuilding, enjoying home-built boats, traditional nautical subjects, sailing, and the like. Don't be afraid to submit a picture of an unfinished boat or a spectacularly interesting shop with a pile of wood soon to be a boat ... you don't have to wait until launch day to have a picture that will interest us here! Image Details: The image size for the calendar is 11 x 8.5 inches, with a bleed to 11.5 x 9 inches (we use a black border for the bleed, as this area can be lost in trimming). Image resolution is 150 - 300 DPI. Please convert the image to PNG format (preferred) or JPG format. File sizes must be kept below 4MB for PNG format and 7MB for JPG. For JPG files, remember not to use too much compression, as it degrades picture quality. A good tip is to print out the picture at the 11 x 8.5 inch size and see how it looks. About "Resolution" and "DPI" Resolution and DPI are often used interchangeably, but they are quite different. Any digital image is composed of pixels. The pixels are the small colored square dots that can sometimes be seen when images are enlarged too much, or if you look at your screen close enough. Resolution is the number of pixels in the horizontal direction by the number of pixels in the vertical direction. For example, a picture with 1200 pixels at the horizontal direction and 2100 pixels at the vertical direction would have a resolution of 1200 x 2100 pixels (pronounced 1200 by 2100 pixels). As you've probably noticed, nowhere in the above definition it is said what size the pixels are. This is where the DPI comes in. DPI is simply Dots Per Inch. A picture with 100 x 100 resolution would be 1 x 1 inch when printed at 100 DPI, and 100 x 100 inch when printed at 1 DPI! There's a tradeoff. The bigger the resolution, the bigger the image is. It will take more disk space, occupy more memory when loaded, and will take longer to be transferred through the Web. On the other hand, the bigger the resolution, the better the image looks when printed. We feel it is better to wait a bit more for your photo to upload than to have a bad print at the end. So fire up the cameras, and let's get some great pictures submitted! I'll announce the winners as soon as we have 12 great entries, in plenty of time for Christmas gift giving (I'm sure SWMBO will LOVE a picture of your messy shop!) Oh yeah ... In submitting your picture, you are giving messing-about.com the right to use it in the 2004 messing-about in boats Calendar, but you retain all other rights to the picture. messing-about.com can use a reduced or thumbnail reproduction of that image in flash animations, HTML pages, etc. in order to market the 2004 calender, but will not use the image without your permission for anything else. Up here, we don't have SheOak (I don't think, anyway ... unless that's a kind of PERSON, then we must have them because we have ALL SORTS of people here!) I know what an American Tart is, but not an Aussie Tuart, so that might take some explaining too! The canoeythingy would be nice ... Capt Jake has a fine, furniture quality kayak which made the calendar last year. Not sure if it ever got wet though (the kayak, not the calendar.) Quote

Then theres a swag of these treasures... which Im sure every proud dad and mom have! two things... first I just gotta update the pics! and secondly we usually double up or as in the above triple up... so that leads to third we just gotta build some more! Then theres the timbers for me boatbuilding on the front lawn... can yer see a boat there? huh? can yer?? huh??? :wink: SheOak on the trailer and Tuart stacks these stacks have grown a tad since this was taken they now include some few planks of Jarrah which I dont particularily like {to drab :roll: } and one single board of Wandoo which I nailed when my sis left for Broome the other week 8) Okay thats enough from me... so I can send as many as I wish Frank? damn yer gonna be sorry yer said that mate!! :twisted: no I'll be gentle 8) Quote

Then there's a single picture wall calendar that takes one picture (or, like last year, a great collage that Bill Bird designed). Dingo: How many people fit into the canoethingy? Looks like you aren't quite taking on any water with just three. Some of us will have to come over there and help you fill that thing up. (Do you have a "Coast Guard" down there?) Quote

I have a few rolls of film to get off to Wally-world (although I don't know if anything will be worth submitting as of yet).... Sorry to here about the fires in your area..are they close to you, as far as actual flames in your area? I would imagine the air quality must be having somewhat of an effect (well, more than the usual LA air...) Hope all is well!! Bill Quote
Frank Hagan Posted November 1, 2003 Author Posted November 1, 2003 I don't have all the pics selected yet. We have some good ones this year, bu there are still some "empty slots" so to speak! Looks like I didn't fix the URL when I updated the store earlier this month (had to change the software for it, as they keep changing how the site is displayed). It should work now. The fires were about 25 miles from us at the closest point, but the Simi Valley fire did damage some items in our storage yard at work. We had some copper in wooden crates, pallets, and corregated that was burned before our guys could get there and get out the firehose we have. There's a little arroyo behind our property, and it had 100' high flames roaring through it. The wind shifted, and then we got a bit of rain, so the air is clear again (its always clear where I live, on the coast). But it was bad for a couple of days! Quote

We fit me and two wee ones in canoeythingy without takin on water but me an me 16 year ol boofheaded son sorta get damp when we go muckin about... hes a flamin larikin that fella! likes nothin better than to control the paddle "just lay back an rest ol phart let the young fella do the work" says he and promptly turns the flamin thing ass over teakettle!!... but I can take me eldest daughter and third eldest no worries lightweight fleabags the pair of em!! although they reckon I make fine ballast! :? ratbags!!! :wink: ah well nippers eh? fun critters... me an the loverly possumpoop took of for a paddle the other day but mate she wasnt too keen on me tryin for the olymic canoe team!! ... yep took a bit of water that day we did!... felt as strong and vibrant as a young fella I did but she just wanted a gentle cruise around the estuary... ah well... but what the heck!! it was my turn at gettin one up on her!
