Diddle Dally

I'm considering purchasing an Oday22 that needs restoring. What would I be getting myself into? What problem areas do I need too look for. Everything is there i.e. Masts sails hardware etc. But are there problem areas I need to look out for? It mainly needs paint (how hard would this be?) I know this isn't a B&B boat but I'm sure some of you have done this before, so I'll pick your brains!! Thanks!

After watching the Duckworks videos, and finding them very informative, I agree that you should put that project further up your to-do list. You could easily find a video producer from the high school or community college that is just itching for a project to do.

I don't know how far south you'd have to go to escape the snow, we just had a snow/sleet storm here in NC. I'm about 2hrs from Grahams. Wonder how much he got? But I am like you, I thought about a temp shelter, but that won't work. I don't want to "rent" space and toss hard earned dollars away. So I have decided to put my build on hold and found some plans for a pole "barn" with storage upstairs. It's 16'x20', to small for a PS26, but just the right size for the CS15/BRS15 (still trying to decide) that I want to build. And I will have a place to store it when I'm not abusing, (sailing) it. Plus, I have a stack of 6x6x12's that I need to find a use for. And who knows, I may decide on the CS17. after all I'll have the room. By the way, you did a very nice job on that Spindrift! And I thought that would be the boat for me, but it would be to small for me, so I will build a 15 footer. Have you had it in the water yet? Pic's? How about a temp lean-to against the house? The Core Sound 15' requires 8ea. of 1/4" ply & 2ea. of 3/8"ply. I have been juggling the decision between the CS15 and the BRS15 for awhile now, I have put the CS15 on top of my list. And, just incase you want to know, the BRS15 requires "6"ea. of 1/4" & 2ea. of 3/8" sheets. Two different 15' boats, but the BRS15 requires 2 sheets less of 1/4". I haven't figured this out yet. Here are a couple of boats I saw at the boat building shop across the street from the Maritime Museum in Beaufort N.C.! The lapstrake boat is a replica of a rescue boat used to rescue shipwrecked sailors off the coast of N.C. It will be on display at the Maritime Museum. Looks like they are using a batten to mark the planks, and a shot of their clamp system. The other boat is a creek boat with a unique propulsion system don't you think? And did you notice, it's made with knotty pine? The box behind the seat holds the battery. sorry, I don't know much about the strip planked boat in the background. while not B&B boats, I thought you might enjoy the pic's anyway.

Dennis M, That is one beautiful boat! But I'm confused. The pic's on the B & B website show a different sail set-up than you have. I didn't really like the one on the B & B site as I didn't care for the hole in the bow for the folding mast. Although I do like the twin mast cat ketch rig. Do you have to have the large hole for folding the mast in the bow? Your set-up is different, can you explain the differences to a novice like me. Also your mast is wooden, any differences in that, over what the plans call for? I was almost ready to order plans for the BRS15, but after seeing your boat, I may want to reconsider....

Well my wife bought me an early christmas present! A Dewalt 18v cordless drill. I also have a little cordless drill, so I can use that one for the tight spots, and to get that pretty brown coating of epoxy you all are talking about. I do have an assortment of sanders. I have a belt sander, but if I can find a good deal on a heavyer duty one, maybe I should pick it up. Or just use mine till it burns out. I have been looking on craigslist at table saws and have seen some pretty good deals on there. So, a table saw it is. I also have a miter saw, and a circular saw. Gotta stock up on some clamps. I like the pcv one's I see people using on their boats. The one thing I need, that is at a premium is a space to build. Maybe I can build a lean-to off of my shed. Maybe some thing astheticly pleasing to the eye with blue or camo tarps .

Thanks Tom for the info on the sails. You may have swayed my decision towards the BRS. I think that building the BRS would better suit me, as I can grow into it, even with homemade sails. I'm not going to be racing it ! So the 15 it is! Now, gotta build a new shed to build it! I need a new, larger, shed anyway! Or maybe a temp. shelter. I recieved the materials list for the BRS15 and the CS15, and the CS requires two more sheets of plywood. I also got the picture cd, and can see the difference's in building techniques between the two. However, there are more CS pic's than BRS's. I would recommend anyone considering the CS's to get the pic cd. As there is a weath of info on it. If anyone has any building pic's of the BRS, I would like to see them. Thank's to all for your input. I'm looking forward to getting my build on the way, put it won't be anytime soon. But at least now I now what I want to build, and can make plans for how to build it. I will put the plans on my christmas list...do I really need a table saw? Any suggestions on tools I might be needing. I know I will need a plane, I had a Stanley 4 1/2" in my hand at the flea market, but wasn't to impressed with the $50 dollar price tag. He said it was a rare one. My wife said she thinks her grandpa's planes are still at her mothers house, so I will wait to see what is up there at christmas time.

Thank you for all your responses. Yes I have considered the Core Sound 15. And I have factored the sails, I just don't know how much they are, but I know I will need two of them with the BRS. Besides, I like the BRS a little better than the CS15. So if you take the sails out of the equation, how do the two compare in cost to build? I know that the Spindrift takes two sheets less than the BRS, and if I do go with the BRS, I know I will have to get two sails and make another mast. So I know there will be a difference, but how much? I really can't go much smaller than 12' as I am 6'2". I thought about the 10', until I saw one at Grahams. I thought it was a little cramped. UGH! I just can't decide

I'm on the fence about which boat would suit me. I have narrowed it down to these two, but just can't decide which one. I have never sailed before, or built a boat before. I am on a limited budget, and materials cost's seem about the same between the two. I would like to know how the two differ in performance. I will be sailing on lakes and around Beauford and Morehead City (when I can). So any advice would be helpful. Thanks

That short Simmons was tearing up the water with that 8hp two stroke Yamaha! And a sharp looking boat to boot!

I am going to reply to myself! After going to the Messabout, and sticking my nose in the shop,( where all the majic happens) I found a Spindrift 10'! And after discussing it with Graham, I think I like the 12' Spindrift "kit!" While I may have to postpone getting the kit, instead of just getting the plans and the wood, I think the time frames would catch up with each other. I really like the dovetail joints at the bow, along with the CNC precision of the cut pieces. And I think this would be a very good first boat to learn on.

I think I've got this figured out! :-D There was so many beautiful boats there today! Here are a few, including "Marissa!" under the shelter. I enjoyed Grahams description of her design, and talking about the Spindrift kit.

I'm going to be there as one of the wanna bee's! I have never sailed before so maybe I can catch a ride with someone! I hope to be building something between 12'&15'. I hope to take a spindrift or a 15' coresound for a test drive! This is cool! Where else can you go to test a boat design that you are wanting to build, only to find out that after you built it that it doesn't fit! So if you see a guy taking lots of pictures and notes, that will probably be me! Looking forward to next week!

I am really enjoying your pictures of your boat!! But I am also intrested in the high tech shelter you are building in! I won't be building that size "dream boat" but I do need to build a shelter. Probably going to build in the 12-15 foot range. Haven't made up my mind yet, probably do that at Mess About next week. I have a 16 foot shed I could build next to I guess.
