Well I tore out 700 sq/ft of wooden deck and replaced it with concrete. I hate wooden decks in the NW. Too durned much maintenance required! mmmmmm Im startin to thunk the same think there Jake... after the flamin wood today and the top strips over the coming week and then as she now wants it BIGGER Im gonna be out there buildin this ruddy thing for the next few months Im thinkin by the time I get done I will be flamin fed up to the gills with wood!!!! :? Gidday there Frank Mate I shot of an email to you earlier today with a couple of shots in it did you get it? hows time going for that calendar?? We fit me and two wee ones in canoeythingy without takin on water but me an me 16 year ol boofheaded son sorta get damp when we go muckin about... hes a flamin larikin that fella! likes nothin better than to control the paddle "just lay back an rest ol phart let the young fella do the work" says he and promptly turns the flamin thing ass over teakettle!!... but I can take me eldest daughter and third eldest no worries lightweight fleabags the pair of em!! although they reckon I make fine ballast! :? ratbags!!! :wink: ah well nippers eh? fun critters... me an the loverly possumpoop took of for a paddle the other day but mate she wasnt too keen on me tryin for the olymic canoe team!! ... yep took a bit of water that day we did!... felt as strong and vibrant as a young fella I did but she just wanted a gentle cruise around the estuary... ah well... but what the heck!! it was my turn at gettin one up on her! Sorry Dave I actually think Jarrah is a plain and boring timber whereas... SheOak now thats some timber!... I intend doing my rails and any cabin bright work with this beauty {along with Banksia and Rose Gum} Tuart's pretty snappy too... all my cleats and such will be in Tuart along with the keel deadwood frames and any other bits I can make with the stuff!! got 3 stacks of the ruddy stuff!! Harder than Jarrah in fact. Jarrah on the other hand is so boring... common as grass around here boring red wood unless its curly Jarrah then its fairly sweet but thats not that common... anyway a pic of chunck to hand... And a spoke from the wheel Im building Jarrah can be interesting in that you can occasionally get white mixed in the red but thats not usual.. one side red... tuther side white... 8) eh? I wouldnt mind seeing some of that Black locust or sassafrass or even som of your oaks... black walnut would be flamin cool as I reckon as Ive always had a thing for walnut 8)

Id go with Mike at woodenboat fittings in Victoria... a flamin top bloke! 8) Now thats a good endorsement from a sandgroper to one of them fellas over east!! :wink: Theres too much metal in boats already... make em wood! use some mighty fine west Aussie wood Jarrahs plentiful {over here!} and then over there youve go some brilliant timbers as well... why not make them yourself? you built the boat didnt you? next step in the learnin curve build yer own cleats etc 8)

I built the so called 6 hour canoe... took all up 16 hours then another for splashin the paint about 8) What I did though was have both the Woodenboat article on building the Mike Obrian 6 hour canoe and the one from http://www.bateau.com {look for and download the free plans} which come in both imperial and metric measurements {note here Im still in imperial in adversity with most other Aussies who have gone to that totally incomprehensible metric system} along side me and built a combination boat of the two incorporating a bit more bulk into it... note here it does NOT need it I just did it :roll: Anyways here is WDBS "Canoeythingy" or otherwise known as WAEF 01a On the Hawke 12ft catamarrans trailer waitin to hit the road... Build it!! You wont regret it for one second! and believe me the hoons will love you for it! 8) Ive spent probably 50 hours all up puddling around the estuary and rivers here in the crisp piccinini dawn as the light slowly changes and the day begins and in the late arvo as the day starts to darken to night... its just one heck of a good thing 8) something I should have done a long time ago! :wink: Do it! How can that mob charge for the 6 hour canoe plans? Konrad you forgot the worst... all the above at the same time. and another for those with multiple babies {in our case twins} double whammies of the lot!... :shock: and mate girls are just as bad as boys! actually since Ive got 6 girls those critters are flamin worse! the times of supposed gentle loving bonding missus me and twinnies layin on the bed together quietly sharing a few minutes... one twin would look at the other and mate I swear those two had the most devious of minds! a quick gurgle from one to the other then all flamin heck would break loose!! gooo and wets everywhere and once over and mum and dad suitably unsettled theyre back huggin each other and giggling together! :? clever little monkeys babies are... devious but clever! boys are great with grammys... when our eldest boy was about 5 months or so me mum came to visit for her first viewing of her second grandson {we lived up north and some many miles from her} and so as grammys will do she decided she needed to "check the little buggar out" and she did plopped him on the table stipped him naked and checked everything was as it should be and sitting back with one of those superior grammy smirks was about to say something when Aaron let fly got her a bobby dazzler right in the dial just as the missus was about to warn her to cover the nither regions!!... laugh mate it was a hoot! our last boy was a little big squirter from day one and loved "surprising" those lovely people who love helping big families like ours out... you know the ones who seem to get it into their heads that with 8 kids you have no idea and they simply must help... by changing the babies nappies of course... Josh adored those people sorta like open the nappy and open the floodgates and just when they sort that lot out its whooooooops chocolate doodoos! oh yeah... kids are awesome!! our eldest the twins have reached 19 and a half ones left home but attends home for meals and her sister left home for what we now call her sabbatical but has decided that home is good cheep rent with everything done cant beat that! oops better stop about here :oops: ... aaahhh hoons eh can yammer about them all day we parents can! 8) aahhh one day let freedom ring until then Im about to get my new shed and then its off to find some tools to fill it with 8)

You are just soooooooooo glad you got OUT of bed!!... days when EVERYTHING seems to go RIGHT? Well I had one of them days today! WHAT A CORKER!! A flamin rip snorter bobby dazzler of a day! 8) Went for a drive to a place called Binningup about 40 minutes south of here to a TIMBER auction! and mates WHAT AN AUCTION it was!! flamin ripper! 8) There was Jarrah Blackbutt Marri Spotted Gum English Oak SheOak Mallaluca Woody Pear Banksia Blue Gum Spotted Gum Peppermint and funnily enough Snotty Gobble!... oooohhh mates talk about timber heaven!! 8) Now I missed on much of the good stuff like the 7mtr x 1mtr wide x 40cm thick beautiful figured Marri slabs and the wonderously gorgeous Rose Gum... but I did score wonderfully with the SheOak!! 7 lovely dry boards 3.7mtrs x 590 x 40 and I didnt spend as much as I or the lovely missus expected!! actually came home with more than I spent!! Now THAT is something! The lovely missus was extatic when I showed her the colors and figuring in these boards!... See she seems to have a weird idea that theres a new sheoak and tuart dining table in her future... its gonna be soooo hard to disappoint her!! I couldnt say that to her this arvo simply cause she was so happy with the buy that it would have been a shame and hey she was so happy with my timber buy she was smilin and huggin and such why spoil that??!! Some days are just perfek! ooohhh somedays life is GOOD!! 8) sorry Paul but it was a ripper of a day... may tomorrow give you the same type of day as I had today mate! 8)

Gidday there again fellas Well I happen to have a couple of scans of the old sheets titled "Australian Boatbuilding Timbers" sent me by me good mate Mike Field of Woodenboat Fittings in Victoria who I know would appreciate the need to share the information contained... it goes into what timbers are used where pertaining to wooden boats built in Aussie... so Ive hoisted an imagestation album and uploaded the sheets. Im goin to an auction down south on Saturday and hopefully will get some... ready for it??... Gidday Andrew What a bottler of an idea mate... first though can I have a wee dig? Goodonyer! the title mate? How about a capital A for us Aussies eh? yer put a capital K for them Kiwis so... Okay had me fun So given this opportunity I shall venture a couple of things. 1) I will be using Tuart {Eucalyptus gomphocephala} for the keel on any boat I build this of course will need weight of the lead keel figures adjusted if it has one as Tuart is an extremely heavy timber... Tuart has been used in keel timbers deadwoods and the making of cleets and deadeyes for many years... and Ive got a front yard full of the stuff all neatly stacked and stickered! 8) 2) Cullity Timber in Mandurah... poor service in a bad location and for added inconvenience you have to enquire at the desk about every peice of wood in the place for the price... if your not a contractor or builder your looked down on... they also have a very poor choice of timber and on the extremely rare occasion that they actually have any imported or exotic timber it is priced out the other side of the black stump! :x 3) The price of good ply marine or exterior is a nightmare! ...I just added that cause its been annoying me for awhile so I needed to get it of my chest! :wink: Take it easy Shane

Thanks Simon Will give them a "hoi" and see what prices they can offer... 8) Sooo next wee question is... where did you get that other expensive stuff from? the poxy and f/glass? which Ive been quoted at $130per litre for wests and $115 for 6 lits botecote... this is enough for one of Mac McCarthys wee lassie canoes! {11ft} yet on the larger order from Adelaide I can get 30lits for $400... but only if I buy the entire large order! Gawd Im bein a right terror here eh?!!

Okay now I know theres several other West Aussies on this board and Ive been goin nuts lately trying to find a closer source of Marine Ply at a reasonable price here! :evil: The best Ive been able to get his been from Adelaide! :shock: But then Ive got to buy the lot in one whack to get the better price! Im presently tossing up whether to build the Vacationer... the TC670 from Mike Waller http://www.wallerdesign.com.au ...the J6 from Ross Turner http://members.ozemail.com.au/~rhturner/ and the only other contenders at this time are the "elf" and "Eun Mara" from Iain Oughtred from Duckflats http://www.duckflatwoodenboats.com/ I havent figured out how to put the name over top of the url yet!! :oops: yeah some choice eh? :? ...But believe me Ive narrowed it down!!! :roll: A FLAMIN LOT by gar!!! 8) Anyways the others all stipulate ONLY Marine grade ply but it seems to be that construction grade is fine for the vacationer?... all the designs above are epoxied and fibreglassed inside and out... Im just wondering why? if there is a reason of course! So Simon and Julian and any other West Aussies where did you get your gear??!!!
