Hi, after few years of sailing I identified some problems with some deformations which are to be observed constantly while underway or moored. I posted a photo showing and explaining them, but only one reason is obvious for me and I'm working on replacing ready made plastic battens with properly tapered wooden ones. Reasons of two else deformations stay unclear to me, so please take a look and share your comments.

A question: if there's an aluminium mast which consists of 2 or 3 tubes of different diameter each, and there is a part of the sail track mounted to each tube, how to assemble those tracks while assembling said tubes, to get one long smooth working sail track assembling them to get one long smooth working sail track? A photo illustration would be much appreciated too.

nice job! my question is on the mizzen staysail fixing position: looks lik you placed it on the bow deck at the centerline , while usual (?) way is to have to positions on both sides of the bow deck, and to change them while tacking (?). At least this is my case, . Well, is it just Lapwing solution or your improvement?

Thanks for the article. I guess the Thistle jib in both purposes - jib and staysail - is operated by the same system? A halyard which works as a stay behind a mast? Or there are 2 different systems?

Congratulations to both teams. A question: what's the area of a Thistle jib? I like the idea of using it as a stysail as well. Did you make it during the race, or beyond?

I thought about stick-up skiff described at R.L.Parker book and website: http://www.parker-marine.com/sharpie16page.htm Same principle? By the way identical rig was in use at the Kuronian lagoon (south Baltic seaside) at the first half of XX century, but over round planked hulls. Norm probably knows it

I've just received the precise description of that squall, sent to me by another sailor sailing there aboard another small open boat. He is a navy pro, (US) so it's absolutely most precise description. "I called it a black squall---leading edge of a frontal system, solid line of black fast moving clouds, short, intense, gone in 15 minutes, max winds somewhere around 35 knots, maybe as high as 40. " We were lucky it was no a SQUALL, Howard! We were 3 onboard , by the way.

This summer I took BRS17 to Finland again to join the archipelago small open boats cruise called Raid Finland. There were all kinds of weather including a front from the west passing over us with a short squall which catched us underway. It took about 1/2 hour since we noticed small dark line on the horizont to be hit by strong blow and rain from big dark low cloud with a rugged edge. That /2 hour I decided to use full sails heading to the coming front to get away as far as possible from a lee rocky shore of the big island we were passing along. Wearing rain clothes , fixing gear etc. Few minutes before the big blow we fixed mizzen to keep the bow facing the wind, pulled down the main to reef it. Next... it was too late to try to reef the mizzen. We started to continue sailing having a schooner rig. It was really nice and efficient sailing, rewarding enough to ignore heavy rain. We have had good drive to be really safe from the lee shore. After another 1/2 hour the squall was over. No photos of that episode, but I have found old photo of Doppio being rigged for the first time , still on the trailer, I called it "parking cruise", and it was the schooner configuration tried unintentionally. It is attached, hopefully. You can see tha main/mizzen ratio . Well, what do you think about above story? About using a schooner rig in emergency (as I had no idea and even no intention to think how to reef the mizzen that time).

Hi Graham, hi Tom, many thanks for your explanations on a BRS/Lapwing rig question. I'm every time impressed with the difference which might be made with few inches - we in metric system have to use much more centimeters to do the same! And yes now watching photos and videos of Lapwing and CS15 i can see the sails are identical. BRS17 is a great design anyway and the only problem is no enough time for more extensive use. So all experiments are to be done underway , during Finnish races. What i'm sure about is my sails are too heavy (7 oz dacron) in weak winds and I'd like to order a new set 3-3.5 oz. This might be a good opportunity to try the layot which has been proposed to my boat on the very beginning. It seems to me that "Dawn Patrol" uses the same shape but bigger area of course. Having that first sketch and DP photos i might ask my sailmaker to draw and make it . Is this right way of thinking?

Just curious: if a Lapwing hull was built, would the rest things coming from my BRS17 fit to it? I mean masts'n'sails, rudder device, centerboard ? I think no many BRS17 plans are sold, but the rig seems to be the same as CS 17 rig. So I hope there are few people who have both CS and Lapwing plans and might check it. I guess that two boats of the B&B familey have a possibility to use a gennaker : Southern Skimmer and Dawn Patrol. Let me ask few questions: Is it just a complement of a mizzen staysail, or is it for rather separate purpose ? What's the reason to use it? How does it work? Last but not least: anyone else is going to use it?

After my this year experirnce (including heavy weather tests of 1 mast rig) I will keep 2 mast rig until one of them is broken or one sail is lost or so. It was at wind and seas of Force 4, and one sail had just no enough power to drive the boat through waves. The trick is to keep 2 sails working but have more load. Another day in Force 4 we have had an efficient upwind sailing fast with 2 sails (reefed on the beginning, and unreefed once we faced waves ) and 5 onboard. Here is 3-piece video from this year Raid Finland: This year raid was especially worth towing the boat 1000 km from and another 1000 km back to Poland, to sail 50 nm and face all kinds of weather and enjoy open sea archipelago Kotka. Beyond, 3 B&B related skippers have met there: Ralf of Munich, Germany who sails BRS15, Brian of Maryland who owns CS17 plans and me of Warsaw (BRS 17). Thanks for that cool meeting guys!

has anyone put two self-bailers, each symetrically to the keel batten? My question is because my this year observation when the boat took splashes going upwind, heeled . Self bailer cant work while on winward bottom panel.

Looks like overall hull shape (bow&bottom especially)of Amanda tells that she's a BRS family kid, while Spindrift belongs to CS family. I'm looking forward to see her underway on youtube!
