  1. Chick, I'm reffering to btrowe's plan of using BRS 17 as a powerboat with 10 hp motor on the center of the transom. Of course It might be interesting to discuss small sailboats with small outboards mounted off the centerline, but this topic is titled "BRS17 information" and less people seem to be interested in. So may be it would be useful to start another topic?

  3. Those are different transoms and different notches. It is stated at the BRS17 plans "Transom is designed for long shaft outboard". A short shaft will work only if you re-design the transom and/or the notch enough to get what Thrillsbe says - the right position of the cavitation plate when submerged.
  4. btrowe, if there's 10 hp outboard envisaged (and you need a long shaft one for BRS 17) , make your transom doubled with a solid wood board above the aft deck. And never tow the boat with the outboard left on the transom. Otherwise you're at risk of breaking the transom. As for the knee, it is exposed in BRS 15 plans indeed, but Graham did not used it in BRS17 design. If you prefer (or already have ) a short shaft engine, there're few systems for mounting it outside.
  5. Hi btrowe, I'm a happy owner of BRS17 since 2008, and I can honestly tell that she sails excellent, rows excellent, motors excellent. Just this year cruises: late spring big lagoon cruise in Germany and late autumn 180 km long river cruise in Poland: https://www.flickr.com/photos/10196268@N05/albums/72157668790396046 https://www.flickr.com/photos/10196268@N05/albums/72157660705532248 During years I faced conditions from 0 of Force up to 5 of Force which I'm trying to avoid of course, but sometimes I had to go ahead (a responsible dinghy guy makes photos in 5 of Force ; ). With crew of 5 no reefs were made, with crew of 3 2 or 1 sail were reefed. I have no solo experience in sailing, as my trailer doesn't allow for solo launching. I'll fix this problem some day. As for a motor, I'm using 2,3 hp air cooled honda what is enough power for my adventures, as no need to plane. I've sailed her solo one time only due to More albums containing BRS17 pictures (of Polish and Finnish raids) are also accessible via my Flickr account.

Wow. BRS has lower freeboard and no side decks so we have to be careful ; )
  7. That's it, Thirillsbe! As for that Polish improvised term, we called it "krzywy baksztag" what exactly means "crooked" or "skew broad reach". It's an interesting story on how sailing terms have been spread and mixed, anyway. "Baksztag" seems to follow "backstay".
  8. My question wasn't which boat should I buy. It was how gennnaker might improve BRS's performance. Expedition racing is what B&B promotes its designs with, isn't.

  10. Yes, we did it on Bay River Skiff 17. In other words it was sailing wing-and-wing while going broad reach. Generates more speed indeed. We called it "wrong broad reach" (rough translation from Polish). Worth practicing.
  11. Thanks for the photos. A mizzen staysail is a must-have sail indeed. We sailed miles this year using it (long tacks made few good opportunities) and it works fine. As for a gennaker , I actually wonder whether it doubles staysail action, or makes en extra advantage itself (there're photos of Southern Skimmer sailing staysail and gennaker the same time, and - like that from tom 151 - sailing with gennaker only). Each possibility makes me interested. To be exact I'm not racing BRS , it's just cruising but I'm lucky to sail at large areas which allow for really long tacks. The bowsprit seems to be technical question easy to fix on BRS.

Hi All, there's attached (I hope so) a photo of BRS17 with all the power means she has at the moment - well may by another pair of oars is missing but yes there's another pair, left ashore at that moment. Made last week during Raid Pomerania (polish-German border area). We (the crew) stated that a genaker was to be another propulsion we might try. I didn't see genakers on B&B boats in use except EC22 Southern Skimmer and CS17 La Perla, and at the drawing of CS17Mk3. Why it is so unpopular and what about using that designed for CS17Mk3 one on BRS17? Wojtek

  16. Congratulations, Dave. Looking at the picture I'm just guessing your sails have one reef each,is this a right impression? Have you a staysail for your Lapwing too?

  18. Looking at the suggested layout for the main pieces of a BRS15 made of plywood, there're 6 sheets of 3/8" and 2 sheets of 1/4" plywood. As for wood, hard to say exactly, but seems to be not a big deal.
  19. Many thanks for all the comments on boat building time. As a home boat building guy (BRS17 plus few Jim Michalak designs) I do confirm it's hard to control and count the time of a boat building. It's just a part of a sailing project. But it's for the first time I'm going to outsource. I need to talk to about a price of the hull in relation of time necessary to build it.
  20. How many hours would you expect a skilled boatbuilder to spend on building the Lapwing hull, from the start to the final varnish? There're few already built, but I can,t find such information. Just wood work, no rigging. Plus centerboard and rudder parts.

  24. Hi, my BRS 17 is powered if necessary with very popular short shaft aircooled Honda 2.3 hp. Most probably I would skip an ngine at all to use oars only, but my every year Gdansk bay cruise includes 7 km long passage along the commercial harbour and shipyard channel to get to the sea, and it is said one has to use motor there. I have no problem with mizzen sheet interfering because the motor is moved out behind the transom thanks to the adjustable bracket, and blocks which the sheet ropes run through are mounted on the rear deck an inch or two in front of the aft transom instead on the top of it. Overall view on the photo attached to "sail shapeing" post (several posts ago on this forum).
  25. Many thanks, I 've had nice and informative readings , a cup of coffee in hand either..... Few photos of BRS 17 under sails in reverse, on coastal waters of Poland, Finland and Greece. Guess which photo comes from which country... and by the way I'd like to introduce Flying Flaneuse, another cat ketch which consists of the yellow hull of my rowing boat, Jim Michalak designed Robote, and the sailing rig designed and made by me upon inspiration and appreciation of Graham's job.
