Action Tiger Posted December 11, 2015 Author Report Posted December 11, 2015 I think this counts as rapid progress for this build. I'll get them plumb and fastened then start putting other sticks on. This thing might be a boat, yet! Quote
Action Tiger Posted December 12, 2015 Author Report Posted December 12, 2015 Somebody ran over my mailbox, so I spent half the day dodging rain (YES! rain!) and planting a new one after I dug out the block the old one was buried in. I did also manage to rip the last of my stringers out of the beautiful board I found for them. Not one knot! There are a lot of stringers on this boat. Two more 1" stringers (the chine stringers) to scarf and I can get to tying this sucker together! May actually have a frame this year! Quote
Action Tiger Posted December 19, 2015 Author Report Posted December 19, 2015 Okay, El Niño is here. We've been freezing, so I haven't glued anything for days and days. New system moving in with rain should raise temps a bit, right? Or come in and rain, but stay just above freezing, so snow is a little higher, warm rain is lower, and horrible sleet is here. Still not gluing, but whatever. All my stuff is cut, my mold notches are all trimmed to fit the stringers, and molds and stringers are getting rounded. All the blah blahblah before putting them together. I got 1 piece of 1" stringer that looks as if its curve matches the bow deck curve perfectly, and two 5/8" square stringers that sprung into the most pleasing curve. I'm really thinking about getting a space heater and tenting these glue joints, but that seems a little aggressive and organized for a dingbat such as my own self. It will, after all, warm up soon. See, while I was writing this, it changed to just really cold rain... Quote
Wyo George Posted December 20, 2015 Report Posted December 20, 2015 Glue them inside your house! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Action Tiger Posted December 20, 2015 Author Report Posted December 20, 2015 Oh, I would, except the only place long and flat enough is in our kitchen and eating nook thingy, which is probably the most heavily travelled patch of real estate in the world. Plus, it's already MUCH warmer today, like only one sweater, so by tomorrow or next day we should get back to warmer afternoons. And, I really did need to get these frames in order before I start assembly, so I can just go. Also, I want to put cheeks on the front bow lip, to shape it a bit, so I'll post those pics, when I finish all the finishing. Plus, I dug tons of stuff into my garden during the rain! Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 4, 2016 Author Report Posted January 4, 2016 Holy cow. Since I last posted so bravely, I learned I will once again be volunteered to run 8 races this year, including a half in 5 weeks. I've been running a bunch...but I have been prepping frames and getting the strongback frames attached. The stems are just sort of on in the pic for the sake of the photo. One of my delays has been the fact I forgot to ease the edges of my stringers. A really sharp block plane and a drizzly morning on the screen porch later... nice tinder, and easy edges. Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 4, 2016 Author Report Posted January 4, 2016 And, now it looks even more boatish. This is a dry fit, as it were, to test the stringers, see if they like their spots, see if it all works and all that. This is when it begins to really get exciting... Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 5, 2016 Author Report Posted January 5, 2016 Hey, hey. Just the top half of one frame to fit, but I'll wait until I spring in the gunwales to fit it. The end forms need to be fit, yet, and the stems, but it's really about time to start lashing this boat together. Maybe someday I'll even finish... Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 11, 2016 Author Report Posted January 11, 2016 Okay, only about 5,796 more to go! Quote
Abyssdncr Posted January 12, 2016 Report Posted January 12, 2016 Keep posting the progress pics - they're quite encouraging! Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 12, 2016 Author Report Posted January 12, 2016 It's almost not cold enough to start lashing again. Brrr, today. I got all the frames tied to the keel, and the aft half to the first frame tied to the square stringer midway up the frame. I squared one frame as a reference, then squared the rest. They were all checked by horning, too, which is measuring their corners to a fixed midline point. My thought is to get them all square and semi-rigid before I put the gunwales back on. Too many snakes to wrestle, I thought... I also reasoned it would be easier to trim the stringers at the bow from the bottom up. I may be wrong. Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 12, 2016 Author Report Posted January 12, 2016 The lashing stuff, on a clamp on shelf that follows me... Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 12, 2016 Author Report Posted January 12, 2016 This thing is starting to look downright kayaky. Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 Well, the chine and topside square stringer are tied in, as are the seat slats. The stem top caps are still not on yet because of how I'm going to tie on my gunwales, but I kept them handy to check the lay of fabric draped over the stems during stringer trimming. The bottom square stringers ran in to problems, so I'm scarfing new ones out of spare stock. The gunwales will get trimmed and tied in here in the next day or so. Darn, this is almost a boat, now... Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 Almost all the bones... Quote
Abyssdncr Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 That sure is looking purty! For a sanity check, because all these pics can start to make things appear what you think they ought to be and not necessarily what they actually are, are all your frames 1/2" ply? What size of gunwales are you using? Quote
Wyo George Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Wow how time flies. It seems like just a year ago you were starting this build and already you're hours into it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 The frames are all 1/2" Baltic birch ply. The stringers are 5/8" x 5/8", 5/8" x 1", and 5/8" x 1 1/2" for the gunwales. These boats are funny that way. Fuss, fuss, fuss, and then suddenly it all flies together. For the record, though, I am pretty fast at throwing down lashings. The real crazy part is how fast it all happens after the frame is done... Quote
Action Tiger Posted January 16, 2016 Author Report Posted January 16, 2016 Well, I had the one stringer failure, so I had to make new ones, which I scarfed today, and they are gluing. I think I'll let them cure a few days, as it is a bit chilly. Other than, that, she is done. Once I lash in the last stringers, I can pop her off, lash the last four frames to the keel, and take a picture on grass. I got it right now, buddy! Well, it's green stuff growing low to the ground all over the yard, but we just call it grass to be easy. The weird vertical bar in the extreme foreground is a clamp holding the top plate on the stern assembly. I glued them on last, because I am weird. I think I will add a red pigment to the finish as a goofy homage to the first builders. I'm thinking to skin it in 6oz cloth, but am unsure how to paint it... 1 Quote
