Pull cart/working cradle for core sound 20

I found this nifty pull cart/working cradle by a builder named Bill Moffitt, who is making a Jim Michalek design.  Here is the link.  I have to hook up my trailer today or Friday and get the 1x8's needed for the side and bottom scarf joins and get a 20 ft 2x4 to make the stringers so I might as well make something like this, or otherwise I will just add a crade to my sawhorses.  I would imagine that for the cradle portion itself, any cheap plywood will do, like cdx?

 

I am concerned that adding shaped cradles to my sawhorses will result in the boat being too tall to reach over the side of the boat to make fillets, etc.   Bill Moffitt's pull cart might be too short though.  Plus I would think I would need to stretch it out some. 

 

Any thoughts?

I made this set up for my 17' Core sound build. very worthwhile to be able to move boat around during the build proccess

 

dificult to see the wheels, steerable one end only,4'' dia from Harbout freight,platform is 1/2" ply and 2x6

 

pretty much able to reach most area's inside the boat exept the bow which with some trepidation I got inside to work on with no problems.

Here are some photos of the cradle I built for my CS17. Also on castors, steerable at one end. The diagonal piece could be unscrewed at one end and rotated onto the timber on one side to allow for crawling under the boat. When I flipped the boat I just screwed some padded horizontal beams to the top of the frames and end for ended the boat  which kept it level and at a good height.

carts are the bomb! I made one about 3' x 8' with 6" castor wheels. Like makenmend's rig, the bottom is a tray which of course is now quite full of cut-offs and pre-cut boat parts. I fashion cradles to fit different boats and screw them on to the 2 x 6 cart end blocks.

I really wanted to make that cart that I saw that Bill Moffett had made for his Michelak boat he is making, but Graham tells me that those big harbor frieght pnuematic blow up wheels are going to cause me problems over time as far leveling the boat. I have not poured to concrete in my new boat building shed yet.  My buddy came over and said "Tom.... why spend the money on concrete... your just going to spill epoxy drips all over it...just keep it dirt"   The only problem is that it is really soft sand and I was counting on those  pnuematic tires to pull thru the sand and I knew those casters would just dig in.  Looks like I am going to have to call my concrete buddy.  Guess  I won't have problems with castors after that.  I have another buddy who loves boats who told me that even as a young married guy, he always seemed to find money for his sail boat habit.  Guess I will have to also.

Fill the tires with foam. That will solve the leveling problem.

Big tires are important when you are dealing with sandy floor.
