Anchor Stowage

I have a 4lb Danforth anchor for my CS15. The thing, as you know, is an awkward shape and does not quite "fit" anywhere. I saw Tom Lathrop's idea about stowing an anchor in the fwd compartment too late in the construction process to set up a similar arrangement. How do you folks resolve the issue of anchor stowage? I'm in need of some fresh ideas.

I had a similar problem so I switched to a 9 pound delta anchor for my CS17. The shape is pretty compact and I don't find the weight to be a problem. The anchor, 20 feet of chain, and 150 feet of rode all fit into a plastic tub which slides under the foredeck. Some will argue that I am "over anchored" but that's the way I like it, especially when forced to anchor with less than ideal scope.

I've left the boat anchored off a lee shore in 40 knots of wind and slept all night, which is more important to me than an extra 5 pounds of weight.

Not me. Peace of mind alone is reason enough. There is a big difference between the needs of a lunch hook and an over night anchor.

Hi Randy, I don't have to worry about tides and current where I sail, although the wind and chop can be very strong. I am wondering if a 3 lb folding grapnel type anchor would be more appropriate for daysailing use. It would certainly be easier to stow, but would it effectively hold me in a 20 mph breeze and 2 ft chop? I could save the danforth type for camp cruising, which would give more security than than the grapnel.

I'm sure the folding thing would hold much of the time, but I don't have enough experience to know the limit. I feel naked without a real anchor - but that's my problem.

Hi Micawber,

Did you see the stowage box I made for the forward hatch compartment on my CS20? I stow a 4lb. Fortress Danforth-style anchor there. A pic is at this link: http://www.roguepadd...u.htm#hangstore

Didn't take long to build and it works very nicely. I also made a storage box for under the forward seat in the cockpit, which is also viewable on that page under the heading "Anchor Box/Storage Drawer," but that is for my second anchor (a 9 lb. HyrdoBubble anchor) and will likely only come along on an extended trip. The 4 lb. Danforth has proven to be plenty for day-tripping and beach-anchoring.

Wes, thank you for the link to your pics. Very interesting. The CS15 will require a different solution than you and Dale have arrived at. There is a huge difference between the CS 15 and CS 20 and the way they are laid out. Your cockpit is much roomier and deep enough to "hang" a danforth. I'll have to give more consideration to the problem. I do not have to arrive at one this summer and winter will give me plenty of time to come up with something -- or so I hope.

My plan, which I never got around to, entailed a short bowsprit and a small Bruce anchor a la Sea Pearl. The Sea Pearl drivers really liked the set-up.
