Spindrift 11N finished. Now what about mast and sail?

Hi guys,

I recently finished my 11N.

I started to look into masts and sail.

I don't want to spend $800 NZD on a new sail so I started to look at alternatives. Maybe buy a used mast with a used sail? Or maybe an used sail and build the mast myself as recommended by the plan?

What I already figured out is that the Laser Radial mast and sail has very similar dimensions and probably I can get a used mast + sail for a decent price. What do you think?

Are you aware of any other racing class which has similar dimensions?

Or should I try to create (glue) my own sail?

Also how easy is to put on/remove these sails with sleeves? I am thinking of adding some rings to a non sleeved sail and the rings would be put around the mast.

An old Laser sail will work well on a  Spindrift.  That is what I did on a Spindrift 10 years ago and only cut off the lower portion to get the proper area.  It worked well enough to win a lot of races.  Ideal would be a new sail from B&B but when money is tight, why not.  If an old Laser mast is available, use that too.

Just a thought. You might work a deal with B&B since those sail are sewn in Hong Kong...I think. Maybe save some shipping expense at least? I am not sure because Graham sometimes does things to the sails before sending them off to us. It would not hurt to ask them.

I paid less than US$200 for a suit of S11 sails three years ago.

build your own sail. Sailrite may even have a kit sai for your boat.  If not, just get the sail plan from B&B, a book like Marino's "Sailmakers Apprentice", order up the material (Sailrite or Duckworks), score a good used sewing machine (mine is a Snger portable $35 USD), and stick & sew! Jib I built is about 75 sq ft, main about 100 sq ft.

Build your own mast as well. My mast is a 22' birdsmouth construction.

Plans include instructions for an aluminum mast and specs for sail.  B&B can sell you a sail as well, and may have it in stock.
