Traction Kite Photos

Not long ago, someone (I can't remember who) posted something about traction kites and buggies.

I looked for that thread, couldn't find it.

I found some photos of the last time we had my buddy's traction kite out.

Taken by a local photographer, Gary Mayo.

It's a hell of a lot of work, but it's really fun.

We spent a week on Bradenton Beach years ago. At sunset, a couple guys came out with kite cars.

They were three wheeled with baloon tires that were big enough that I think the carts would actually float.

The kites were rectangular.

As a kid a friend of mine got a parachute from his father who was in the Navy.  We used to use it to pull us across the sports fields at school in a wagon.  Stopping did prove amusing some times.

My friend who owns the kite I was flying in those photos also has a 3 wheeled buggy.

But we haven't found many good spots around here to really use it and learn how to run them.  All of the soccer fields are fenced & locked, or in use.

It's a wierd combinationn of keeping your heading correct while keeping the kite in the power zone.

(I guess that's pretty much like sailing, though, huh?)
