adla Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 this is my makeshift tiller modification --- i didn't have time to design a whole new rudder box etc....so I just worked with what i had --- the added on part is reinforced pretty heavily and where it is bolted on to the old rudder box, at least one bolt is through a piece of mahogany and the ply of the box. At any rate none of the pieces are such that water could get trapped or stand --- there is always a way out for water....hopefully this will cut down on the swelling because it will swell - the rudder and rudder box seem to get the soggiest. I used pintles and gudgeons from duckworks - modified them a bit to fit the keel and it is a MAJOR improvement from the sloppy original design. It is an easy upgrade i would recommend. I also re-ran the jib lines and used Dave's suggested alpine knot but tied it on a snap clip that allows me to scurry up to the front attach to the stay and quickly douse the jib....i like that a lot - here are some pics : NExt weekend is YUBA, Utah - should be a lot of fun with Brit launching and Darick putting his newly acquired weekender in the water...Phil is going to be there and Steve Downs....and Bill Olney from phoenix !!! I've got similar pintles on CGII; this gives me some increased confidence that a tiller head can be made and not look terminally clunky. Nice work DocA Quote
adla Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 thanks - i just hope it can hold up ... i've read that using a rudder puts significant pressure on the box --- but i look forward to being able to pay attention to what is ahead of me and not spend the day loOking over the transom trying to figure out where the rudder is in regards to the wheel. i'll let you know how it goes. a. adla Posted June 16, 2006 Author Posted June 16, 2006 strange as it may be - i took Indian Philosophy last semester and there we were on the lawn doing Yoga....we even did a deliberate walk (buddhism)....ya know - the whole boat thing is pretty wabi sabi (japanese - too keep with my eastern theme) ---- Morgaine is all packed up an ready to leave town....i just have to get through a test in EPY 303 of all things tomorrow - but i am not too worried. i don't particularly care for "test bank" questions and the multiple choice format but hey - it will get the job done, eh.... i will report on the new rudder situation monday! a. John Weigandt Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 We did indeed repair the rudder box on the beach, using some oak stripped off the bottom of my companionway box lid. It lasted for the rest of the BEER Cruise. When I got home, I had about a weeks turnaround time before PIKL and did a more elegant repair with epoxy and ply. It is still a "patch" job, and needs to be completely rebuilt, but the patch will probably hold a few years if necessary :-) John Quote
normoose Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I have been researching and thinking of modifications that I will be making when I get started on my Vacationer and extending the rudder box up higher would enable me to use a tiller if I am disatified with the wheel setup. Of course I change my miind and design plans often. The proof will be in the puddin'! Quote

Basically a couple of 2x4's on brackets, covered with carpet. I probably need to get some pictures posted of the keel guide I made; it really straightens out the boat when it is pulled onto the trailer. Quote
