Hello, I saw plans for sale for a wooden framed greenhouse. It is shaped like a Bishop's hat and is used in the north east. I believe that the designer and seller lives in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. Has anyone seen this link or know the address? Any help is always appreciated, Norm ;D

That is the beauty of the DIY kits and plans available. Iff you have any construction and mechanical background, you can alter the original design to suit your needs in a way that doesn't compromise safety and may improve handling.

Rock on Ray! I can use 1x4s or 1/8"x4"x?" cold rolled flat stock or any number of ways to carry the load. I am only hanging 355 lbs but will make sure it is attached in a way that won't jeapordize my safety or tear the bottom out of the boat.

Definately need reef points but ballast adds reaction time, stability in rough seas and at anchor, keeps the nose down and gives the boat a pivot point if the ballast is located in the right spot. Thanx for all of your alls insight and input.

Ray, I am good with 355 lbs of ballast if I follow your ballast equation. Your boat weighs 550 lbs with 266 lbs of ballast and mine will weigh 750 with 355 lbs. Thanx again for your assistance.

There ought to be an approximate finished weight/displacement in the plans somewhere but I can't find it. Never saw anything like these plans before. There should be a sheet listing information such as approximate weight/displacement and other info for title acquisition and registering.

Does anyone know what the dry or empty weight of the Vacationer when building it by the kit instructions to the letter? I am trying to figure how much ballast to add to my modified design. Any and all assistance is appreciated.

How does this look Ray? Added stainless through bolts with a 1X4 backer running down center between panel joiners, downsized to 355 lbs. and shortened ballast by 2'. Also moved the mass aft a little. After sealing and painting the interior I plan to insulate and add buoyancy to all exposed interior decks, ceiling and panels so I can easily mortice out for bolt heads, nuts and washers, joiners and backers. I am far away from starting the build but the more I prepare for my model, the more I want to change. Thanx for your input. Norm

Two 16' 2X4s are less expensive than a 16' 2X8 every day and I will spend my time scrounging thru the stack of twisted sisters that you find in the pile of 16' 2X4s.

You have me re-thinking my idea and a 3/16" or 1/4"X3"X?" steel plate for the forward part of the ballast with through bolts is probably a good idea as I am rough on my boats. These devices will be under 1 1/2" construction foam that can be morticed to accept any shape [steel backer, wood backer, bolt heads and nuts and washers] that is underneath. This along with keel filets, mat, cloth and resin should hold the ballast in place while pounding through rough water and weather. I thought that you had 370 lbs. I will re-think my weight needs and the ballast will take up less space. Thanx again my friend. :roll:
