Cabin top paint

I have noticed that some folks put anti slip on the cabin roof to hold the glare down. I think Devlin said something about that but I really don't remember where I read it.

Travis how did you have yours painted?

I am going to use semi gloss paint but I am considering using the anti slip to dull it down.

What do you all think? Graham? Charlie?

Pilgrim's cabin top is gloss 2 part urethane, as is all the rest of the boat, but the decks have had nonskid applied UNDER the paint. It does knock down the gloss significantly.

gee separate' em if you want antiskid, use it.if you just want to reduce glare, adjust thegloss by adding more or less gloss topcoat to semi gloss basecoat p s everywhone in our house waits with bated breath for your photos so dad [me] can glue another bit to the boat,guess you didnt realise i am about two chapters behind you'

Two chapters behind ain't far mate. So considering I have only been only averaging 3 to 4 hours a week you should be pass-in me up soon. 8)

You do not need to use semi gloss paint if you intend of using non-skid on your top. I used a heavier mix of non-skid, mixed into gloss paint, and this will flattened your paint and keep the high gloss surface in tack. This will also help make the paint last longer. This will help clean any dirt and marks that may get on your surface after the boat and paint ages. I apply a seal coat on the heavy mix as an added feature. This can be done after the paint dries and is fresh without any prep work.

A very good non-skid product is manufactured by Awlquip Paints. The product accepts the paint color and wears evenly over time, unlike many of the sand based products. This product comes in coarse and fine grit. I would not recommend the coarse grit in a heavy texture. This will cause rug burns on your bare skin if you slide across the texture.

Glare has not been an issue for me, but the cabin top is slippery when wet if you try to walk on it. I hardly have any function aboard where I need to walk on it anyway. I do need to get up there to raise or lower the mainmast.

I've noticed that the nonskid surfaces tend to gather dirt, etc (particularly the hatchcovers that I painted with nonskid later) and are difficult to get really clean. I don't plan to add any nonskid to the cabin top.

The nonskid treatment that Charlie used is easier to keep clean and MUCH tougher than the nonskid paint that I used later on the hatchcovers.

When I roll or on occasions sprayed the mixed paint with the Awlquip non-skid and topcoated the mix, I have never had dirt to collect and stay on the surface when I have washed the boat down at the end of the day.
