Hi, I'm new here. I am considering a Core Sound 17. My plan is to build a Penobscot 14 next (hopefully starting soon) and then later on a larger boat. The goal is to keep up with the kids as they grow up. But who knows, I might start on the larger boat first.

It looks like the CS17 has plenty of flotation. Is the forward section sealed off? If you put hatches in the seats, do you make them airtight, or do you fill the unused space with containers of air? I assume the boat won't sink, but is it hard to right? Also, it doesn't look like the cockput is self-draining. Anyone put a drain in there?

Do the plans include plans for making a dodger and/or tent? I get the sense we're on our own with that.

Also, can you sleep on this boat? Can you squish in beside the centerboard trunk? I think some boats have a system where you put boards up at the level of the seats so you have a large flat sleeping area. Does that work with this boat? I can't quite figure out the logistics.

That's all for now. I'm sure I think of more questions later.

Thanks,

Charles,

Graham has a picture of his Bay River Skiff (17ft) with a boom tent in his post of Fri, Jan 9 2004.

I'm at work on a CS20. I also expect to camp in it with my 3 boys. It will sleep 4 without bumping heads, even though I'm 6'2". I expect eventually to fabricate something like Graham's tent, though I want screens to let in air and the view without the bugs. I'm about to start a separate thread to solicit ideas on how to raise the floorboards to make the seats into wide bunks.

I found Graham's pictures of the capsized CS 17. It looks nice!

I also found a post where Graham says he's making floorboards for his CS 17 that can be rasied up to make a flat sleeping area. The thread is "CS20 camping?" Actually, that was this morning, it seems. We look forward to seeing pictures!

Thanks for the info, everyone!

Do some builders prefer wooden masts on the CS17? That might provide enough flotation to keep a capsized boat from turtling. It also looks more wooden.

If I got this right this is a picture of Sawdust, a CS17 with the custom tent . It's basically a bimini top with sides and windows. I cut down the forward bulkhead and made a large casting deck at seat height which gave me a 8 x 5 1/2 foot sleeping area once I raised the floorboards. Without the floorboards raised I could sit upright and cook or whatever inside the tent. Even with the forward bulkhead in place there's plenty of room for two people to sleep comfortably.

Hello Charles

Glad to see your considering a Core sound. That penobscot 14 is a pretty boat. But as I think I told you before I think the coresound would be a much more family friendly boat.

Don't misunderstand me though the Penobscot 14 is a very nice little boat and she was very fun to build. I just think for my tastes the Coresound is more usable.

No matter what you do first this forum is a nice place to hang out and ask questions.

Hi Scott,

I've been following your Belhaven progress. Looks great.

Yeah, that Penobscot 14 is one pretty boat. Hard to not want it. But the Core Sound 17 might be more practical for me right now. This past summer I explored some nice areas on the Great South Bay, where I sail my Sunfish. However, the waves and wind can get too much for a Sunfish, so it's a little scary sometimes. A bigger boat is definitely needed there if I want to bring the family out. 17 feet would be a nice size for me.

I'm glad you told me about this forum!
