I checked the forum and no new posts! :shock: That is the first time that has happened to me. Where is everybody today? Working on boats?

Sure wish I was working on a boat. I'm getting there, got a secret account I am sneaking a little to every chance I get. Few more months and I can start the big stuff. In the meantime I have decided to build some of the little items that I don't need a bunch of expensive plywood or long boards for. I have the ship's wheel done, turned out pretty nice. I think I will do the shelves for the cabin, got wood for that. Looks like there are a lot of other little things I could build, I do have some old broken up pallets out back might be some wood there :?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I was off-line all day. I corrected an error on the hull bottom this morning after working out, then went off to rehearsal in the afternoon. Home Depot earned a stop on the way home, but didn't have stainless steel screws -- is that what everyone else used? On arriving home, I went to the local street fair, then hit the town's Mexi-eatery for dinner, followed by the news and a quick scan through National Geographic.

Geez, no wonder I'm not working faster...

Well, I noticed the same thing earlier. Then my computer broke. It is in the shop at teh moment so I am posting from SWMBO's computer.

Try your local ACE Hardware, if you take your shopping list, they will have a lot of the hardware items you will need. Take the plans with you too. If they get interested, they may give you a discount on the items as you need them. My local one did and it was well worth while. I will probably owe a bunch of them a ride, but what the Heck. They are good people. :roll:

I found, (as did a lot of others, the you will use more screws that are 1/4" shorter than the ones specified. So you will need some 3/4" as well.

They carry stainless phillips but not square drive.

Ray's right ... if you can, buy them in bulk! I think I used 1500 of the #8 x 1" screws (or maybe #6, can't remember what I did when I "cheated" on what was in the plans).

I spent entirely too much on screws. Small jobs are great to keep momentum while being without enough material to tackle the big stuff. The wheel, the shelves, parts for the mast box (how far are you?), the hatch box, bits to hold down the bowspirit (and bit chaulks), rings that hold in the porthole windows, gaff jaws, rafter chaulks, the cabin tunk and cabin bulkhead gussets, trailboards (I still need to make mine), you can make some of the hatch covers, main cabin hatch and or parts for it, et cetera, these are just off the top of my head, my plans are an ocean away right now.

Maybe the "worm" has infected many of our fellow builders! I know three people at work who have their computers in for service because of it. Makes me glad I have Norton running all the time!

p doug, as tough as it may sound, i found the quickest way to secure materials was to take on a bunch of 'honey-do' projects. my rule of thumb was every time i ordered or picked up supplies for one of these projects i would "embezzle" about 25% of the cost in aquiring materials for the boat. not only do you score some lumber, but she feels like she owes you for doing her projects! just be sure to lose the receipts. :oops: :twisted:

Ken, I like it! Coarse I've been married so long it is on longer "honey do" it's "GET IT DONE" I got so desperate to get going that I went out and tore down our barn so I'd have wood to build the cradle to set my boat on while I build it. Reading the posts today and looking at the fine boats being built, I've got to get going. I sure do like the coresound boats the guys are building. Sure do like the Weekenders. Got to get at it.

I had my main computer (Windows XP), which I use for real time charting during the work week infected early on. I had it cleaned and downloaded the patch back in late July. But my laptop got hit even with the patch inplace according to the tech that worked on it this weekend. Hate bugs, virus and have a distinct dislike for the people that feel it is necessary to create them.

For the ones who create viruses is it "Keel hole" or keel haul"? What makes people want to do that much damage to people they don't even know? Sometime I just don't understand the human beast.

Steve, Tacoma Screw has SS fasteners. There is also an outlet down towards Tenino, Valley Nut and Bolt. They did most of the machining for the tabernacle and chain plates.

Tacoma Screw has the best price I've found locally, but they're still double what I can get on the web. Looks like I may have to do some plywood cutting while the UPS people try to find me out in the woods.

I have use McFeely's square drive screws on some projects and I love them. I don't know how they compare pricewise, and is there a concern with filling the square hole up when using them on a boat? Some how it seem like a lot more to fill them a phillips or slot screw head. Will the filling stay in or pop out over time? I was looking at the no-co-rode ones as opposed to SS. Somewhat cheaper.

McFeeley's is interesting, and I suspect the square drive has its advantages, but they're still pretty proud of their product and price it accordingly. I've found an outfit in Oregon called GatelatchUSA and they have pretty good prices. Anyone know of them?

I used McFeeley's sq drive on my Vac. No problem with filling the sq holes. I like the quick response and mail delivery to the house. The prices are in line with most hardware stores. I did use the No-Corode type. I did buy the boxes of 1000, used a lot of screws. One thing that I liked was the screws would stay on the driver bit which made for faster work.
