Hey Thanks Everyone for responding to my poll!

Those polls are kinda fun!

It seems that the majority of you have gone with side access and a few have gone with the flush top.

And most of you are happy with what you got. But some a large group of you wish you had done the flush top.

I was thinking that the side access would be the easiest to implement, but the top flush door sure looks nice. The problem with the doors, as drawn, is they can come loose and pop you in the shin... Not very pleasant. The problem with the top flush hatch is the extra weight and the depth of the mechanism.

I have been thinking about it, and what I am thinking of doing is the side access, but install panels that slide back and forth. No hinges. Just need to build a track above and below on the inside, with a door in the track. I can use thin ply for that. I also need to make sure that I don't get a warp, like Frank.

If I cut into the lazarett, I can slide the door all the way back to the transom, which means that I can have a larger door at the front, with a larger opening. I wouldn't have the partition, but I have seen several other's that don't. Please let me know if this is a mistake. :?

I have also been thinking about what to do with the area between the lazarette and transom. Since I am building a tiller instead of a wheel, I don't need to put the rigging for the wheel. I could just fill it up with floatation, or I could turn it into storage space or a cooler. But that would be a lot of extra weight in the back, and very far back at that (I'm thinking of a lever....)

So, what do you guys think?

In the lazarette area, I made a small flush hatch to access the area. I figure I will need to get in there to attach the motor mount, and it is a convenient storage area also.

I like the idea of an access hatch in the lazzarret. I think that I will add this to mine.

The only concern I would have with sliding doors, is the old something being stored inside fall or slides so it blocks the area the door would slide to and oops, the door won't slide open. Coarse if there are two doors, I guess you open the other one and reach and move to object out of the way (if you can reach it). Maybe I am way off base and not picturing what you are talking about correctly.

Good Point Doug,

I think I will add a second panel, behind the door, to prevent something from blocking it.

I don't have a set of the first Weekender plans at hand, but I think we did top-opening seat hatches in the beginning and went to the fron=opening ones later. Why I can't remember. It might have been to avoid rain infiltration.

That is the one thing that gave me a little worry. I am planing to make a tarp out of poly that snaps onto the back of the raised seat backs so when it is stored so it will stay dry.I can also use it as a boom tent so we have more room away from the bugs that always show up when you are not moving.

Oopps I feel like an idot. If I had only looked at the next page I would've seen that the plans call for an access hatch in the lazerete.
