I may have been absent of late, but not totally idle.  The first coat of spar varnish is drying on the hull as I type...

 

As much as I've truly come to despise epoxy during this journey, the sordid, sick SOB in my head kinda wants to do another one, but without all the mistakes I made the first time.    Whatever though, this will be a "working" boat and will get lots of good river miles with the kiddos this year.

I notice you have added a metal keel. Any challenges to doing the same?  I have some brass for this purpose.

EDIT:  Just realized you were talking about the rub strip. I have used it a lot. Just use some half oval bronze like that used on traditional canoes.

Not sure just how many layers of varnish remain after all the sanding between coats, but today I will pronounce it ready for the water and see if it floats after work.
