  1. It is an awesome river to cruise. Sounds like a great trip.!
  2. Ted, Very nice to hear from you. And the modifications remind me that there is always new life in an old boat. I'm pleased to see you are keeping Avocet so nicely up to date. You have done many of the things I was thinking about. It would be nice to get the two boats together. I'm very pleased that you seem to be enjoying Avocet. That is most important. Nice to hear from you and please take care.
  3. They pulled out nicely and the holes are marked. I will re-drill to clear out the holes ( 1/8") and put new stirs in the holes before final painting. The boat is being primed.
  4. I wanted to layout deck hardware before priming and painting. That way I could dress the holes and if I made a mistake, I would make a mistake in an unfinished deck, therefore potentially less work. The trick was to mark the holes. I used coffee stirs.
  5. Thank you. Yes I hope so. Nothing else to glue on. Next just smoothing it out and priming.
  6. Thank you. Me too. I agree about the 80/80, in fact I'm not sure there ever really is a finish, but continual improvement. On to the next part.
  7. It is barrier coated which is kind of redundant. The good news is that after the bailers are installed and few other items get taken care of then it will be ready to flip next Tuesday. Then install the hatch, and tabernacles. I will then install all the rigging hardware, then remove it, then properly dress the holes. Then prime the boat for final painting. The bad news is that although the white looks wonderful, it does make some flaws evident, ie slight undulations in the chine up forward where it keys in. I thought I had it properly planed and sanded but even with excellent light I could not see it. It will be OK the water won't mind.
  8. Last coat of epoxy over glass. Let is set for a week before barrier coat.
  9. That is incredible! It looks really good.
  10. Would it make sense to raise the board slightly when trying to heave to? It would move the center of effort back and I would think allow the boat to point slightly off the wind, and then drift slightly sideways? I think I remember that the boat would settle side ways to the wind if both sheets were released.
  11. Amos,

Good morning.  It was very good to see you on Friday.  I hope it was an excellent weekend.   Just a quick question:  I looked up the Defthane and it seems to be a clear polyurethane varnish.  Did you use a PPG paint on the deck and topsides as well?   If so do you remember the product?

    Thank you

It is called Devthane 379.  You can buy it on Amazon.

  12. It's been a while. I got delayed by a few things, but this is where we're at. I'll take a few weeks off then back to it. All time lines are out the window at this point. Sheer strip is dry fitted. Will let it stay there until boat is flipped. I'll mark the screw holes then re-install once bottom of boat is glassed.
  13. I did a dry fit on the cockpit deck today. Things line up pretty well. I plan to glass the top of the panels before install. All horizontal surfaces will be glassed. The cabin top will be glassed in place. My goal is to flip the boat Memorial Day weekend. There is a lot to do by then.
  14. Function over finish, Congratulations for getting it on the water. If not for you, it may have just faded away.
  15. Don, Enjoy your month in Florida. The boat looks great and hope you have a great trip. Regards
  16. She looks Awesome!. hmm that color reminds me of another boat...
  17. Both boats plane. The Wayfarer of course much more easily. One thing I liked about the CS17III was that it would plane, and felt very secure. It is nice to be able to escape displacement hull speed. Somewhere there is a video of me in our first CS17III Avocet and we were sailing in the Neuse River and doing about 8 knots. The Wayfarer will outpoint the CS17III which is not a surprise. It is a different rig and made for racing. But along with that you get a much different feel that requires a lot more attention. Different horses for different courses. The Wayfarer will plane in the lower teens and the CS17III I believe in the upper teens. Graham and Alan would probable have the exact numbers.

  19. David, Good evening. I am building my second Core Sound 17 MkIII. I sold my first boat, tried a Precision 18 which was a disappointment, so now I am building a second boat. My daughter is building a pocket ship. It has been a slow project for her due to work. It seems like a good kit. It does not have the room of the Core Sound. My wife and I like the Core Sound since it feels very secure, stable, and manageable in a variety of conditions. Our other boat is a Wayfarer Dinghy. The Core Sound is the boat we sail to relax and to do over nights. We don't want to conquer the world, just get away from it for a while. I am biased but I think with good reason. I hope this helps. If you have questions please ask. Regards
  20. Don, The boat is looking very good. Its amazing how much work it is to rehab an old boat. Hope your winter adventure is enjoyable.
