I was having trouble getting a pic to post the other day; so here is a single for anyone interested.

Thanks. The LOA is 7'7" with a 47" beam. The project grew as it went along. I originally planned just a rowing dinghy but decided, why not make it a sailing dinghy. I designed the rudder and daggerboard after the free Bateau D4 plans and just made a square mast. I bought a Dyer Dow dinghy sail off ebay. It is 45 sq. ft. which is just a bit big for the dinghy according to what I see for other similar sized dinghies. As for sailing, I have never sailed a dinghy before so I have nothing to compare it to; but she is very quick. The boat is too light for me to sit on the side seats and it is very tight sitting in the floor with those side seats taking up so much space. And the tiller sticks in my back; even after making a shorter one than the original. Someone suggested a push/pull tiller which I believe would work fine. I believe she would be very difficult to right and bail if she ever went over.

I built a dinghy a couple years ago and though I didn't buy the plans, I drew my own from the pics of the Nutshell of the Bateau website. Of course, you know I just had to get her wet. Took a quick spin down to a friend's pond and put her in. She's tippy just as I thought but then again, she is designed for a two-man crew.

Finished up yesterday. She's not perfect but I think she'll do just fine. I even picked up a pair of oars at Wally World (they'll be gifts for Father's Day from the girls). Finish on them was rough but I sanded and sprayed them with some Helmsman.

Thought I do a little probing and find out if you have a favorite site or two that specifically document a build. I have marked numerous ones that I like to browse. One of my favorites is one that documents the building of a William Garden Tomcat. This one is carvel planked. I may perhaps attempt to build a Tomcat some day, though I think I would do it strip built. That's the sharpest deck on any weekender I've seen and looks like Half-fast will be a beaut too!!

Anyone here use one or know of someone who does? I'm thinking about buying one of their sprayers - they have several at or below $100. I'm thinking of using it to do the canoe.

I have installed the seats and breasthooks. Now it is just a matter of sanding, fairing, and painting and I'm in the water!

Just thought I might add - website listed this as an 18 hour project. Anyone believe that? I have 30 plus in her already. Probably 20 left. Still a lot faster than the dinghy at about 150 hours. But then I was told making a boat into a sailboat doubles the project.

Canoe is all taped up and plywood epoxied. Just need to do seats, a little finish work, fairing and she's ready to paint. I'm going bright on the inside and a light cream on the outside.

I have my canoe stitched and just about ready for tape and epoxy. The canoe has some rocker in it. It is supposed to be flat out to within 3' of the ends and then have about a 1" rise at the ends. It's not much so I doubt I worry about it. The cross pieces are just wedged in but they are the correct dimensions of the width at those points.

I started a canoe yesterday. I'm building a Selway/Fisher Wren. It is a 15'10" plywood stitch & glue canoe. Not a big project but it should be fun when done (and fun to build). This was my first time to loft. Probably a good intro to it - not to complicated. http://www.selway-fisher.com/Opcan16.htm

The "results" page in the Watertribe site says, "This Challenge is over and in the history books." Of course there is a winner, but has the competition been called? Seems to be a lot of confusion.

so there is another Kidd who builds boats. My family is from Nelson Co. VA. how about you?

How sad. Our sympathies to his wife and family. I'm still amazed at the connection I have with my first and only (so far) build, a little 7'6" dinghy. I can imagine his feelings for his boat.
