Thanks Ray for the simplicity in your last post. Having never sailed I am following all of this carefully, but will spend a considerable amount of time getting my feet (hopefully that's about it) wet before experimenting with additional ballast vs. flotations issues, other than perhaps a battery for now. I plan to keep this boat for some time and hopefully will recall these discussions in the future.

Good work Ray, keep the pics coming as I am fascinated by the process of making the bulb.

Here's one that I found similar to what I am thinking. I thik this was from one of Devlin's boats. I thought it somewhat appropriate as my boats name will be "True North". But I am always trying to think of alternatives and keeping eyes open for ideas. Actually was considering doing this same design in concrete (colored) in our driveway when I finally get to finishing that.

Bill, frame was mahogany, 1/4' stripping was white cedar and redwood (curtesy(sp?) Capt. Jake). All joints epoxied together (butt joints w/ dowels), strips epoxied inplace also. So far 2 coats epoxy on it. Will continue with multiple coats of varnish. Had to take a break from the 'to do's' of the boat and have some fun with finish work. The hatch is actually flat, in contrast to Stevenson's plans showing a 1/2" rise to the center. We'll see how it fairs. Actually got the concept from seeing Jake's boat, my hatch is almost identical to his. The big project is going to be the cabin hatch, as I am planning on stripping that as well, but incorporating an eight-pointed compass inlay into it. Will have to get me one of those Japanese wood saws me thinks.

He got that for free. An elderly man he knew from his outboard get-togethers gave him a pallet of mahogany, etc. stating 'on the basis he build the boat' and do nothing else with it. He was just too old to do it himself. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

I know, the stripping's not symmetrical, but with limited power tools, it's about the best I can get.

My start of my Weekender inspired him to get back to work on his runabout. Thought you might enjoy these. P.S. - You'll notice a few outboards, he has about 30 more. He collects antique outboards.

I found that a tad bit of trimming was required with mine. I assumed it was due to slight fluxuations in the loft of the keel. I simply used a chisel to whittle a little more material from the slot in the stem and shaved a hair off the foreward end of the bottom hull. Most of this was to get the distance required between the aft keel and aft hull bottom as I used a 1/2" transom instead of 3/8".

So here's a few bits & pieces of stuff done. Closer & closer to hull sides. Thanks to Jake for the cedar stripping. Now I did steal his hatch! :wink: :wink:

Barry, just tested here and seems to be working. I am going to go the cookie route again here. Try deleting all your temp internet files and cookies from your system after deleting the avatar from your profile, then log in again to enable a brand new cookie. And as Jake pointed out, are you also typing in your password before submitting changes? Trying to sort this out for you. I just enabled a board like this for the retiree group I work for, so it's good troubleshooting for me. My thoughts were, Barry, that since you've been away, the cookie on your system is 'aged'. With that said, I'll shut up about cookies, it's making me hungry. :wink:

Barry, double check to see that cookies (at least one for this site) aren't turned off.

Seen the boat first hand and picturing it with the green main sail, it's going to be a beauty! Look forward to seeing it at the show!

'Fire Escape' is perfect! Love it! I love boat names that are fitting and representative of the owner's life/lifestyle.

Tyler, you may want to get some of your rigging set for your steering before the transom area is closed up so you don't have to do everything through an access port. (eyebolts, pulleys attached, etc.). Just a thought. Are you caulking any joints?

Tyler, Just a word of caution, as many pointed out to me and have mentioned during their building process. Get as much interior stuff done as posible before you place the hull sides (epoxy, primer, paint, etc.) as many spots are difficult, awkward or impossible to get to once thats done. Otherwise, good progress and keep the pics going!

I agree with Bill that there is the tendency for overload, but to the contrary, with the newsgroup feed purging itself (especially on a 3 day cycle as Frank spoke of), there's not necessarily a ton of stuff to go back thru should you be away from the board for a while. It's not archived and kept as is Frank's forum. I think it may be useful/neato just to be able to pop in and see what may be flying thru there without having to start yet another program just to check the newsgroup. A picture window of sorts. Of course, that's just the opinion of one man, and if you ask my wife, she'll tel you a man's opinion don't mean ***** (squat)! :wink:

Mike, you've left me a little confused here. First, when replacing a power unit, a reinstallation of Windows is not necessary. Now when you start your computer, are you doing it with the back up startup disk you spoke of? Or is this happening on any start? Extraneous drives (those other than floppy and hard drive) will not show up as available in Safe Mode as they are driver driven and the floppy and hard drive are 'hard coded'.

Thanks for the info Knut. I realize each one is probably different in its features and the same with the software, but its a good starting point to begin researching with. We have many little islands and coves in the Puget Sound here and to have the ability to go back after the fact and plot where I may have wondered around would be interesting.
