Well, the trees and greenery are kind of an East Coast thing. You get used to them after a while, and a lot of us actually become quite fond of them -- except possibly during allergy season. If you ever want to trailer Morgaine east, don't let them worry you too much...we realize you folks out there are greenery challenged, but counseling is available in many places to help with the transitions. DocA; planning test launch this weekend...I hope.

There is an antique outboard motor association, very active. Google antique outboard motors. Lots of information, classifieds, regional swap meets, etc. Also, Duckworks (www.duckworksmagazine.com) has a guy who writes extensively on restorting/maintaining old outboards. The colums are archived on their website. DocA

Ah, but it is such a nice touch, a matter of style and flourish. A Letter of Marque and Reprisal looks good in the ship's papers, might help keep the insurance rates down (terrible cost for hull insurance for independent pirates these days) and, incidentally, might keep you from being hung. :shock: Not sure it helps with Coast Guard safety inspection though... DocA

Ah! I knew I had seen a picture that looked like that. I've started cutting one of similar proportions and with the same bolted from top rather than from sides approach. Thanks! DocA

I may do that eventually, but that's probably not going to handle what is actually going on. I don't have jaws... I tried crossing the boom on the mast like a standing lug rig. That turns out to present a much larger issue with jamming up in the shrouds. as the foot of the boom lifts much higher than I expected. Found two pieces of oak. Butchered one, decided it was time to go inside and work on a paper I'm supposed to present next week. DocA

Ah well. My attempt to simplify running rigging hit a snag. I tried for a single lift halyard with the boom crossed on the mast with parrells similar to a standing lug. The boom lifts cleanly and simply, and there is one less line, but, as someone suggested might happen, the boom jams in the shrouds. Back to square one and figuring out how to make a good set of jaws with my limited tooling, and, I fear, too square section mast. Going to be tight getting to Rend Lake now. DocA.

I am now on my third version of a boat cover for Charlie Girl on the trailer. Two versions from heavy polytarp and now a commercial boat cover that, while a bit ugly where it has to be bunched up and tied off around the bow, still covers her completely. Stretched down around hull all the way around, bungee cords, etc. Toward the stern and cockpit, the cover goes all the way down to the chines and ties off. And so it rained today and, once again, I had two inches of water in the cockpit. It does not seem coming in around the bow and running back to the cockpit -- the foredeck is dry, dusty, and has no water marks. I give up. I'm going to have to install a drain. A transom drain won't work. Does anyone have any advice on a floor drain in the cockpit? What type of hardware, plug, etc.? DocA

You know, I'm actually driving to Minneapolis tomorrow for my daughter's graduation from the U on Friday. Boat's not ready, and, while it would be fun, I suspect two trips to MN from down here might be a bit wearing. I'm still targeting Rend Lake, but only if I get her in the water and tested out first. No way am I going to stick her in the water in front of everyone without a rehearsal...no way. DocA

Yup...same thing has happened along the Carolina coasts I used to haunt in college. Sad thing is that a few more hurricane seasons won't help. Up the coast from the Grand Strand up though the Outer Banks and all it was Hugo that cleared away so much of what was there and opended damn near the whole coast the the new megabuckyoucantgotothewaterthroughmy yard oh and fill the marshes to culture. Sigh DocA

I would expect to see Morgaine flying the Red Dragon long before any bit of lace. I'm sitting here trying to get back to work, but it's not easy. Master and Commander is on the tube. I find myself distracted. DocA

I feel your pain. This weekend I intended to get the mast back up and test all the running rigging. Unfortunately, several of the bolts and screws I bought for the last bits and pieces were, when I got home, the wrong size. It's those bits and fits gremlins. So, now it will be well over a week till I can get back to it since we are going to my daughter's graduation this week. So close, so close. At least I had everything laid out on the lawn.. DocA
