Hay when you build cabinets for 30 someodd yrs. sanding is just part of the game.....When I started out yrs. ago I belt sanded all ,face frames ,drawer fronts, and raised panel doors all with a 3''X21'' belt sander, makes you appreciate my 36'' wide drum sander I have had for years.... So a little orbital sanding on a cedar strip kayak is no big deal....

I know the Canoe, is heavier than a kayak...all those floor boards and inside gunwals and lumber decks at each end ..mine weighed 40 or more lbs...... .But youre price of a cedar strip canoe is way out their...A gallon and half kit of epoxy is plenty..and some 6oz. cloth and some free 11 foot cedar 6X6 cedar beams and you can build a couple of pretty inexpensive boats...Heck I built 2 from old 8foot cedar fence pickets.... http://s147.photobucket.com/user/scrawford_photos/library/16%20foot%2036%20canoe?sort=6&page=1 Old cedar pickets The 16'X36'' from 2 beams weighed like 45 lbs you could stand up in it and fish...

This skeg is awesome going diagonally into the wind for a long distance you are locked in straight as an arrow....and it still doesn't leak around the box paddled it a lot this summer.....

The boy is a natural..When he first got in, it seemed twitchy just watching him sitting in it next to shore as I held on to the stern...But he said it was fine...one time he leaned over so far the combing almost got wet but he was still in control..... ​ Maybe he gets it from his mom..she standing up in a different kayak to untangle a lure...

It is hard to get a boat downsized to custom fit a person's weight etc.... Christopher Cunningham's book is unique in its way to figure the length-width of a kayak to a person's size..... Take that and learn the kayakfoundry design program ..... But it takes a lot--lot of time and from experience, my 3rd design build.... I finally got one I like to paddle.....The lighter and shorter a person is the narrower the beam they can handle...

Stick a piece of BB out side to be exposed to the elements for a half dozen years like I have and watch it not delaminate! I made a 17.5 foot S&G out of 1/8'' BB this year plenty strong....and have used the 3/8 on several SOF builds for the frames..... ​The smell of the dust when cutting it is very distinctive because it brought back memories of my 7th grade woodshop class back in 1966...

OK the boy's dad finished coating it, he carved a seat and we made a back band...hopefully get it on the lake they live on .. Tomorrow supposed to be 70deg.

Look what I came across a few weeks ago just strolling through the lumber aisle at Lowes......I have been contemplating building a SOF using the steam bent rib style of Greenland kayak.... A 16 foot X 1'' X 5 1/2'' with 2 small knots ...cedar used for floor decking...well this piece would definitely look out of place on a knotty cedar floor......

I have the trailer on hand it's a 5X8 Tractor Supply brand.. the base of this teardrop style camper will be 5X10...

Well he put his first coat of Helmsan satin spar urethane today ..No color added..looks good... Jeff...On the coaming, I used every other hole registered on the plan ....figured that would be plenty...

Well the father was able to come over and sew up the fabric nice job for his first...Whip stitch left to do...

I have had a pc. of 1/2'' BB outside for a few years nailed to a fence post and it hasn't delaminated yet....

I agree because the fresh oiled look goes away in time and you have to add more to get that rich wood finish again....

I use one of my old Artist paint brushes 1 1/2'' wide stiff bristle .....

How are you applying the finish? I just bought some from him too.... I brush mine on, 3 coats of Helmamans spar urethane.....

I built up a plywood V block that would bolt on using the holes the grab handle (painter) usually is attached to.

The rails that they slide on are 1 1/2'' wide 1/2'' plywood the footrests are made from 1/4'', 3/8'', 1/2'', what scrap I have on hand... I use this style in other boats....

The keel was beveled with enough relief to clear the fabric... I coated this area with epoxy prior to skinning.... Saturated the area with epoxy prior to the stain and urethane...It held up the first time in the water....

I wonder if dabs of hot melt glue added to the ring prior to skinning then reactivate with an iron.... would hold the fabric?
