Darn, I started to put all four pieces of the cockpit together first, Then I re-read the instructions and decided I had better follow them. I sure think your way would have been a lot easier.

I am at the point of fastening the forward bulkhead in. It has to be kept butted against the ends of the cockpit sides, the bottom pulled up while also pushing the bulkhead down to line up with the top of the cockpit sides. I am working alone, what is the secret? I have retcheting straps, and clamps, but that is a lot of different directions to be trying to leverage at once. here is what I have thought of so far: tie the forward bulkhead against the ends of the cockpit sides with a rope, Put a strap over the top of the bulkhead around the bottom. Ratchet it until the bulkhead lines up with the top of the cockpit sides. screw to cockpit ends (glue already on). Let that set until the glue is dry, than release the strap and rope. Now move the strap enough to the side so I can get screws up through the bottom in to the stringers on the bulkhead and ratchet it together with the bottom again. The problem is getting glue between the bottom and the bulkhead before I ratchet it all up again because it already touches the bottom in the center area. Guess I have to look at it somemore.

Ok here is dummy again, but, why didn't the wood mold catch fire? Does the lead cool that fast below the temp it would take to start the wood on fire? Thanks for taking the time to present this, it is really interesting.

Thanks for the info Andrew. The stringer I was worried about I scarfed, as long as I was scarfing I made it about twice as long as I needed. Made it real flexible and easy to bend to the curve I needed. The old leverage thing. The scarfs held together fine.

Yes, I think you are saying in the case you gave the joints are stagered like laying bricks. Is this the "sister" thing? It sounds like you wouldn't lay out stringers butt jointed end to end to run the length of the bottom, like if they were 1"X1"'S , butt joint two 8' 1"X1" together to make the 16'.

Thanks, I know what scarfed is, I don't know sistered. I scarfed them just because I knew a scraf joint had to be stronger than butt joint. May not make that much difference on a straight item that needs stringers but this is curved.

Question: I can't find boards lon enough for stringers to be one piece. Can stringers be butted together or do they need to be scarfed?

warthog5, How would it work on the outside of a boat and does it come in colors.

I know time is short but if your daughter is inclined, what a great time would be had building the boat with you kids. Probably just or more memorable than the sailing. My kid are grown and gone but even to day when either one comes home for a visit they look for a project we can do in the workshop. Sure has kept us close.

This is neat stuff! I hope the gentleman that did the write up follows through with "the rest of the story". One thing that does give me pause, I keep pictureing the ship from NZ (I think it was) in the last America's Cup, when that piece snapped. Wow! Coarse that is a whole different ball game than the little boats. And I don't even know if that was build out of the same type stuff.

Boy you are moving right along. Looks real good. I have mine all cut out, the bottom joined together and am putting stringers on the bulkheads, cockpit sides etc. I am waiting for my epoxy to get here to put the stringers on the bottom and deck. I have to scarf the stringers together to get ones long enough for that. So far it's been fun. The hardest part has been getting myself started. Did you have any trouble getting the bottom on where you have to cut it in thr front and pull it together?

Ok, I don't know anything about this Aerosleeve stuff so I have to ask a question, probably dumb but here goes. How strong is it? I mean could you make a mast for a small sailboat like the mini-cup with it by putting it over thin aluminum irrigation pipe or 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe? Leave the pipe in the sleeve instead of removing it?

I like your plan Barry. Could you use a piece of PVC pipe for the box like 4 or 6 inch? The reason I ask is because I think it would store better when not in use, than the foam.

Sorry, I don't have an answer but doesn't the designer have any suggestions. They had to do it at sometime. Please keep us posted on the resolution. Very interesting.

Looks very nice, Tony. Matches the lines of the cabin roof with the overhang. Sure would like to see a picture of your whole boat, you know standing back a ways. I searched your posts and didn't see one. Let's see, Boise, Id., just north in Canada, several boats in Seattle area and some in Portland, Sounds like there is getting to be enough for a Northwest get-together. I could come as an observer, I haven't started my Weekender or Coresound yet, but I am into a mini-cup for the experience.

I have just one more comment: I think for this forum to run as smooth as it does, Frank must put in a great deal of time with it. The more he adds, the more time spent. It would be disasterous if it got to be too much and he got tired of it. I think we need to make it as easy on him as possible.

For what it is worth, I enjoy this forum and it's variety of topics. There are things presented here that I would miss it they were on another forum, i.e., the tool restoring and the timber cutting. I don't think anyone abuses the "off topic" items, so far there are just enough of them to keep the forum moving when boat building slows. Just as long a politics and religion stay out of it. This the one place I've found that pretty much stays away from that. Great forum, great people. I've even got computer help here!

Came home and implimented your suggestions. Everything works great now. Thanks. I was in Portland, Ore. this weekend. Went to Crosscut Hardwoods and got plywood and lumber for my mini-cup. Also took a ride in a 1929 Bi-Plane. What a thrill!!!

Then I got smart and bought Norton's Internet Security because I could get it for $9. after rebates. I've been having problems ever since I installed it. Maybe sometimes free is better!
