What do you think of bonding closed cell foam bonded to 1/8" ply and building it out of that (glassed both sides with 4-6 oz cloth)? I would put the ply on the inside and fill the chines on the outside with wood before classing the outside. Quote
Chick Ludwig Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 I would suggest the "KISS" method. "Keep it simple, silly". Stick with the plans as designed. I see no benefit with the foam. On the other hand, experimenting might be where you get your enjoyment. If you really want to do this---then go for it. But one outcome with experimentation, is getting poor results. You just "chalk it up to experience and move on to the next project. Either way, I hope you enjoy the ride! Quote

Howard Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Day Tripper: About 5 years or so ago, someone built a Spindrift entirely out of foam. Can't recall who, but I do seem to recall that once it was glassed to give it the structural integrity it needed, it wound up weighing about as much or more than the plywood version. But I also seem to recall it did float and once he got it painted, it worked just about the same. Have not heard much about that boat since. Quote
