Kudzu Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 No, not a baby in my family but maybe you could say a baby kayaker. My wife finally decided she wanted to get past her fear and trying kayaking. Being the smart husband I am and not wanting this to end bad, I signed her up to take one of my buddies introductory classes. Phil gave her the basics and here she goes for the first time. This smile says it all! Then we move on to some new stuff and that didn't go as well as planned. I was on the bank taking photos for Phil, he needed some of him teaching and I didn't need to be on the water during this. I turned my back to them to move to a new spot and I hear a familar squeal and splash. When I turned around it was all over. Phil used this as a teachable moment about what to do when you are in this situation. And she got back in and away they went! This is my favorite photo of the day. Phil was teaching them bracing and when he told her he was going to roll her boat over on the side, the expression on her face was YOU ARE GOING TO DO WHAT TO MY BOAT?? She actually enjoyed herself and the first 'splash' get her past her fear of being trapped inside. So I think we have a new kayaker in the family! Quote
lisian Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 My husband has a fear of Kayaks as well and he informs me he will not be trying out the 'Firefly' when I am finished it. Hopefully your wife does enjoy it, now she has put her feet in the water. Cause I am pretty sure she knows someone who has lots of different Kayak's to try Quote

Kudzu Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 After an hour or two of the basics he took them out for a short paddle. I was "allowed" to tag along on that one but forgot my waterproof camera. She was having a good time and deliberately turned over since she was already wet. She is past the fearful stage now. We need to buy her a PFD and let her paddle some different boats to see what she likes. But I think she be paddling more and I suspect I will be building a boat for her this winter. Quote
