Are there quite a few Lapwings being used today?

 

If a person is fairly competent/confident, would he be ok to make this boat with plans only?

Lapwing requires more planning and layout than a Core  Sound.  It is an elongated plank over temporary frame build instead of a stitch together, fold open hull.  Once the hull is built the rest is similar.  I guess it should be considered harder to build, but if care in measurement is taken and an understanding of plot point layout is had then it is doable.

There have been only a few Lapwing's built. It is a more complicated boat and time consuming hull to build. For instance Alan went 3d with a Core Sound 15 yesterday and it took him 17 minutes I believe to go from the panels laying flat to a wired hull. He is posting a video soon. It would take him weeks to plank the hull of a Lapwing.

 

I tried to make the Lapwing build as efficient as I could by using the structure as the building jig but the planking just takes more time.

 

As Dave said once the hull is built the rest is similar. It may even be easier because you already have most of the interior built in.

But it's such a beautiful boat, I'm surprised more haven't taken the challenge.

I hope to soon.  I am putting Hirilonde up for sale this summer.  If all goes well I will buy a canvas garage to build it in and be it's home on the trailer when done.  Having a garage specifically for the boat is an important step to me in the striving to make portal to sailing and back so simple and easy as to facilitate much sailing.  Having bright work last for years and storage care minimized are all part of the plan.
