Would spraying the paint on the  fabric raise the fibers like rolling or brushing does?

I think so. Haven't tried it, but if you fold the cloth and hold it to the light you see lots of tiny fibers standing up.

Have you tried a lint roller or a piece of duct tape on a small area of bare fabric?

 

I have to think that a coat of finish would support enough of the fibers well enough that they could be removed with clean, sharp aluminum oxide paper.

I'd try a sharp cabinet scraper first.
