Davit

I am directing this question to Graham, but anyone else that has a thought on it please chime in.

I havent talked to Graham about this yet but I am wanting to know your opinion if this new build would be able to carry the weight of a davit on the transom. I would like to carry a spindrift 11 on it along with solar panels.

I am just guessing that the total weight would be in around 285 lbs. For the davit boat small motor and solar panels. I would think with the wide beam she would be able to carry it but I dont know.

I know this is a long way off but I am just trying to think ahead. I keep thinking about getting older and being able to just lower a dink and walk out the transom and step in a ready to go dink.

Good Old Boat No 82 ( last issue) has a fairly decent overview of davits. If you make one that's too heavy you can always get a bigger anchor to keep the bow level. PeterP

That's an awful lot of weight in a terrible position. It is also a lot of windage. I would choose to tow my dinghy while cruising. I would definately stow it on deck while doing any lengthy passage. I would not want it on davits in a storm. As far as solar panels are concerned it is more a matter of windage than weight. Size would be a real consideration.

I wouldn't have davits on a 28 foot boat. I might consider a stern mounted solar panel, but would probably opt for a soft panel on top of my dodger.
