SBknox Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 What would you recommend for the total built up thickness of a laminated coamings 1 1/2" tall portion? Next, the width of the 3/8" lip portion? I've been elected, since I'm the cabinet maker, to build the form and glue up Scott's coaming. I've watched the videos and these dimensions are not given. Scott said it wasn't in the manual either. I would guess 7/16" to the 1/2" total glued-up thickness. Is that going to be strong enough, or should I go thicker? The 3/8" part of my question, when adding the portion on the upper edge for the spray skirt lip, same 7/16" build-up? Quote
PAR Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 5 layers of your 3/32 stock will make a nice, strong coming. The lip is likely to take the same amount of punishment as the coming, possably a little more so again the 7/16's dimension, particularly with ash will be quite strong. Quote
Kudzu Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 It's a just thick enough to be strong enough thing. Honestly I don't measure mine but I will. I have been using maple because that is what I had in the shop and it works really well. Cedar would probably need to be thicker. I tried cherry and never again! But how strong the wood is would make a difference in how thick it would need to be. I cut my strips around 3/32" thick and I usually put 5-6 layers. So it probably around 1/2" maybe a little more. The lip is usually 3 strips MAYBE 4. You have to allow enough to sand it down and even it out. But I build mine by eye, I have never measured one when building it. And if I took it off the mold and found it to be to thin it wouldn't be a problem to add more lamination's. I will get down to the shop latter and measure one. Quote
dbirkmei Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I built my coaming from 3 thin pieces of maple about 2 tall and then cut them down to 1 1/2 on the table saw after I removed it from the form. It might be 1/4" to 3/8" thick. For the coaming lip I epoxied 2 bands of 7mm stranded rope around the edge of the coaming. There is a small epoxy fillet on the underside. I will add some pictures tonight. Quote
