My thought is to start with a nesting Spindrift, since I need one of those anyway, then build a little powerboat that my friend's mom threw away years ago, since that's the only way I can think of to replace it. Be careful, maybe there's something in the water in Punta Gorda. As far as gaining the skills you might need... there's a few basic skills (and there's right ways and very wrong ways to do them) that will enable you to build most any wood/ply/epoxy boat. They can be learned in a few days of helping someone who knows what they're doing. Find a local wood/epoxy expert and volunteer to help them out in exchange for them teaching you these specifics. Here's my list of the basics: * Scarfing (for ply and stringers) * Coating & glassing ply * Filleting ply seams and bulkheads * Glass taping ply joins and fillets * Laminating timber blanks (for boards/rudders/tillers/stems, etc) Learning to do these few basics correctly, in advance, will save you endless hours of time, gobs of money/epoxy and give you a boat that will perform properly and be more valuable for resale. I only know one person in my part of the world who built his own boat, and he has no projects right now, but is sure to be some help to me as I gain experience. I'll hunt for more. Quote

My boats are in Michigan but I spend my winters in Port Charlotte accross the river from Tom Ray. I sail and kayak in the Harbor and Peace River.
